In cooking, vanilla is user as a flavor adjunct to add complexity to the main flavor of a dish.
It's used in chocolates, all kinds of cake an cookies, savory dishes of all kinds.

By itself, vanilla ice cream and cream soda, both have a lot of sweeteners, seems for vaping
it need sweetener or another flavor to be recognizable vanilla flavor.

Hi Hallinass, Very glad you are liking liking your ecig! I am pretty new my self but one thing I can highly recommend is having a couple of different devices.
One for when you are out and about to be used with cartomizers(better then carts IMHO), and consider a variable voltage device, more likely to be used at home to drip with, you do not need low resistance attys with variable voltage.
The great thing with the variable voltage devices is you can adjust how hot the atomizer gets. Different flavors do much better at different settings. You are able to adjust and find what you like. It also allows you do see how much vapor and throat hit you like.
Get some samplers from vendors and read this forum it is a great place to learn and the people are great and seem to love to help out.
Good luck to you!

Just one more note , I didn't see much about it as I glanced through the responses. As a smoker, your tastebuds aren't really awake. A delicate flavor, like vanilla might be hard to taste right now. Put it aside and try again in about four weeks and see if it's any better.
I found when I started , strong flavors, caramels, coffee's and the like were what "tasted" best for me. While I love my riva, I'm not all that convinced having to purchase another pv would have been the answer at first. I have a 510 slim that I started with, and got the riva only because I got tired of switching out batteries every whip stitch!
Glad things are working out for you!

Welcome and Congrats :) You've started the learning curve on How To Vape. A couple of things.

1. Sore throats are common when first starting out. Make sure you drink plenty of water. I went through it for about 2 weeks and then it went away.
2. Don't let the lack of flavor scare you off. Hang on to those carts. Your taste buds are going to change. Actually, you'll just start tasting things again. I'm still amazed at how spicy I used to make my food. Had to back off a bit since I started, lol.

Good luck and keep coming back when you have questions.
