last night my 5 year old and I were playing Wii Mario carts. I stepped away to grab a snack between races, as I turned back, I noticed my son had picked up my PV and held it to his lips:ohmy: the light had not come on..
and I said very sternly no NO NO!
he set it right down and has not showed any interest in it since... but I feel like a big piece of $h!#

ever since, it is always in my pocket or out of his reach

You are NOT the worst father ever. Not even close. Momentary lapses happen to everyone! Nothing happened and now you know better. :)

And, if turning your back for a second makes you the worst father then I am the worst mother. My youngest daughter got covered in Vicks and her bangs completely cut off (with safety scissors!) by her older sister!

First I gotta say YOU ARE NOT a bad Dad (Happy Fathers Day to you! btw). Youd be a bad dad if you werent feeling bad about that. I think we learn by our miistakes anyway. I felt the same as you when my little dog got hold of an empty ejuice bottle. I was so upset and called my vet to see what I should watch for in case she actually had injested it (which Thank God she didnt!) But its made me a more responsible ecig user. Now I keep my bottles in a drawer and only up high where she cannot get to them.

I think the fact that you felt so bad this happened prooves what a good Dad you are and the fact that you are sharing the experience with all of us shows what a caring person you are. This can now serve as a reminder to all of us to be more careful with where we leave our PV's etc. Thanks for caring and for sharing.

Don't beat yourself up. Lessons like that make you more careful and no harm was done. I remember picking up a tossed but still burning cigarette from our yard and taking a drag on it when I was not much older. Unfortunately, I rather liked it even then.

When my son was two, I ran across the hall to the bathroom and was in there or about 20 seconds. When I came out, my son was covered in blood. He had gotten on the couch, jumped, and hit his chin on a ceramic planter, knocking out his front tooth root and all. I was reminded of my carelessness for the next 6 years until he got his permanent front tooth. I felt like the world's worst mom for such a long time.

I have a 5 year old too (well, almost 5).

My wife hates my smoking habit so much that she basically planted hate images of smoking in my kid's brain since he was born. It hasn't made him out to be a cigarette hater (yet) but he knows that smoking is a death penalty with his mom.

He will play around with my PV once in a blue moon under my supervision but will never dare to stick it in his mouth. My wife never fails to chant negative stuff about smoking whenever this happens.

At most, my boy will just ask me to spew out some vapor for his amusement.

I think we are both not bad dads.

Not a bad dad at all. At least he wasn't playing with a lighter! We all have those parental moments we regret. My son wasn't supposed to be old enough to roll (less than 2 months old) and he rolled off the sofa- thank goodness it was a short drop onto the carpet. The girl almost drank nail polish remover while staying with my grandmother and she was sitting right there. They are so fast when they are little. I used to wish I was like Argus with eyes everywhere and Kali with the extra arms.

You are not a bad dad.
My mom fell asleep when I was 3, I woke up early and ate a light bulb. The whole thing to the metal.
We all have lapses of attention.

I am SO, SO sorry for this, but can't help myself: That wasn't very "bright" of you, now was it? j/k, and I'm glad you are/were ok.

And to the OP: If you have only made one mistake as a dad, you are lucky. It's a learning process that doesn't end until the day you die. Don't beat yourself up over it.
