I think I've jumped into the deep end too soon and need some help!

Hello all,

First of I just want to say I know technically I am not a new member but Im posting here as I am still a complete noob to vaping so thought it would suffice posting in this forum.

I have been vaping the aspire platinum kit which is an aspire battery with an nautilus mini tank. I found I felt i wasn't getting the most of of the juice I was paying extra for and the clouds I've been getting wern't doing it for me. A friend of mine was like you NEED to try a box mod and start getting some real vapour so i went along with it and got myself the kanger tech topbox starter kit. But now I am completely lost

I've set it all up and in the process I've realized I really shouldn't have got this kit as its far too advanced for me. It comes with three different coils being Ni, SS, clapton and a rebuildable one. I dont want to use the rebuildable as it seems like top much fuss for me and I really don't know what im doing. I looked online and found that most if not all people said they prefer the SS coil. So I put it in and started vaping at 30 watts and it was hardly any different to my aspire so then I tried the temp control and the thing nearly blew my head off! I have no idea how to even use temp control and what the difference even is between temp and watts.

Can someone please try and help me understand this mod a little better and help me with what the different coils are used for and when I should use them. Im the type of guy who is out and about and vapes all day so now im doubting if this was the right mod to buy and I dont have the money to fork out for a different one. Can someone reassure me if sub-ohm is ok for all day vaping and help me get my head around this whole thing. If sub-ohm isnt any good for me can I put my nautilus mini on this mod or is this mod only for sub-ohm??

Hi Don,
First thing, you want to make sure the device is in the mode for the coil you have installed.
For the clapton, you'll want to use the power mode. For SS, use the SS mode. For Ni, use Ni mode, etc...
From there, it's all about finding your personal sweet spot.
Start with low wattage and slowly increase until you find satisfaction.

Thanks, so do you think if im out during the day at work and stuff it would be better to just use the nautilus which isnt sub-ohm? Only say this as people have said sub-ohm runs through juice and power very quickly.

Consider the "mod" as the power supply. It may have an internal battery or a user replaceable battery.

Many modern mods have 2-3 different modes: VW, Temp and Bypass. The one or two modes of interest to you right now is the VW (variable wattage) and Temp.

The VW mode can be used with the Clapton coil that came with your kit, your Nautilus (if the wattage is turned down to 8-13W) and the SS coil that came with your kit. (it will likely need 20-40W to produce a decent vape)

The Temp mode in many modern mods support using different "temperature control wire". Ni200, Ti-Grade1 and SS are currently popular options made available. The "trick" here is to match the menu item with the type of atomizer wire used. The other 'trick' is to get the mod to read the COLD resistance of the atomizer coil that you wish to use. (usually the packaging or coil itself has some indication as to what the resistance ought to be)

If you have a little booklet of instructions that should have come with your mod maybe spend a little time reading about how to set the different modes?

You're getting the advice you need, but I will add: stainless wire can be run in either temp or wattage modes, it works in both; and yes, your Nauti will use less juice than the Toptank that comes in your starter kit. This is because the Nauti has a higher coil and runs on lower watts. It will make less volume and cooler vapor than the Toptank.

I am not trying to be mean here, and I am certainly not an expert on vaping, but I always look for information on the products I buy - how to use properly, safe wattage, etc before I use my device. I keep seeing all these new people using their temperature control mods improperly. This is how we have accidents and it won't help the cause to keep vaping "legal". Please, please read your instructions. That's why they are there!

Yeah I had a good read through it before posting here but for some annoying reason it only mentions not to put the temp over a certain degree on the Ni wire as it may melt. Apart from that it only explains recommended watts settings for different pg/vg ratios. Ill stick to watts for now and have a good read around the forum until I've learnt a bit more about temp control.

Excellent. Sing out if you have further questions, and come back when you have grown more comfortable with your equipment and are ready to learn how to set up TC. You'll like that Clapton coil, I think. I build with Clapton wire often.

This is very true and I really should of done my research before buying the product. I did thoroughly read through the instructions before using the product but all it says is not to go over a certain temperature on the Ni wire as it will melt. Apart from that it only tells you how to get onto temp control mode not actually how to use it properly. Ill be doing my research online before attempting to use the temp control.

I am a bit of over cautious person when it comes to my vaping. My husband keeps telling me how dangerous it is and I need to prove him wrong lol. So, I ask questions and look online for all the information I can get. Even with my batteries, I knew nothing about charging them, discharging, how many watts I could use them at etc, so I asked around first and feel safer now.

Get the 1.5 ohm Kanthal heads and use it in wattage mode and you will be much happier.

Sub-ohm was an expression used by vapers to explain they were choosing to use/build coils less the 1.0ohm so they could vape at more power.
A 0.9ohm coil on a 4.2v battery (3.7 battery fully charged = 4.2v) is nearly 20w. Anything over 20w is effectively "sub-ohm". But, you could vape at 20w with a coil higher than 1.0ohm. You could also vape at 10 watts with a 0.5ohm coil, to an extent.
The latest mods control the power (watts/volts) and can use various settings according to the metal used in the coil. This includes Temperature Control.
There is a 'grey line' sometimes between normal vaping and sub-ohm vaping... the mods take away this complication. To get higher power you really do need a coil well under 1.0ohm. The safety issue is - 'can the battery work properly/safely?' This is really, really important.
I don't use the expression much (it's like a quick way of saying "I like to vape at (much) higher power than standard e-cigs") but in relation to a mod, it's still very useful. A sub-ohm mod will fire a sub-ohm coil. In the past, not many mods could do this.

Looks like you made a good call for your starting point. Not familiar with that mod, but this should apply......when switching tanks from subΩ to non-subΩ, be sure to adjust wattage accordingly before taking that first, hard hit.

Temp control seems like its hard but actually really easy and I enjoy it more because of the less dry hits. The best way to start is to get your ss coil or ni coil and get into temp control then turn your wats all the way down along with your temp. Then go up with both until you find that perfect setting.
