I think Vaping has Ruined my Love for cigars

Two weeks ago I started vaping. Walked into a shop knowing nothing, walked out with an Ego and some fruity juice 0mg. Never thought I was addicted to cigars, even though I chain smoked 3 to 4 on long drives almost daily at night traveling for work, mostly just out of boredom to stay awake. My tongue started feeling really wacky a little bit ago, like always feeling irritated so that's what prompted me to start laying off and give vaping a try.

It's been 2 weeks with no cigar, I drove to vegas, 5 hours, vaped the whole way. Check in at the casino, sit down to watch the world series and light up my go-to favorite premium cigar. A big dark Padron. I had been looking forward to smoking a real cigar for the last two weeks if for no other reason than to see if I would appreciate the flavors more. Let me tell you...

It tasted like I was licking an ashtray. I was so disgusted, draw after painful draw, really, it was incredibly repulsive.

I had been chasing heavier harder hotter vapers in order to try and get what I felt like I was missing from my cigars, you know what... I couldn't wait for the cigar to finish (I mean I couldn't waste a premium stick like that), but I couldn't wait to put out that stick and go vape some flavorful juice...

Now here is my question for the group. When I smoke a cigar, I draw and blow the smoke away (or out the window driving). when i vape, I draw and blow it out slow but I probably inhale by sniffing up half of the second hand vape (with the windows UP). So my question is, if I am inhaling more vape than i ever did cigar smoke, do you think it is "healthier" than smoking a cigar? I get it is WAY healthier than cigarettes, anything has to be healthier than inhaling cigs, but healthier than smoking cigars... cigars aren't chemically treated like cigarette tobacco. granted you are still burning a tobacco and pesticides maybe... I just always felt like cigar tobacco (especially premium cigars) were a cleaner tobacco... one of the problems, since I had started smoking so many cigars, I started smoking 1 premium and following it with multiple cheapies and I think the quality of that tobacco was much harsher and that's what was aggravating my throat and tongue... in any event, just 2 weeks of vaping has ruined cigars for me...opinions???

Welcome to ECF and the converts ... lol ... I hope you're not too bummed about not enjoying cigars anymore...now what you gotta instead is buy you a new flavor of juice and sit down and enjoy it

Edit: I'm not sure how harmful (or not) cigar smoking is ... so I really could only guess, but I'm sure there will be some former cigar smokers along to give insight, rather than me taking a guess.

I still have a nice stash of Padron Annys and FF Opus Xs, etc. as well as pounds of English pipe tobacco. I went into vaping with the idea of smoking cigars and pipes occasionally instead of several a day. Problem is, I keep forgetting to do that. :)

I still vape like I smoke cigars and pipes... nothing into the lungs--just the mouth, throat, and nasal cavities. I use 24 mg/ml to get the nic I got from them, and I sub-ohm 0.5 - 0.8Ω to get the super-thick 60 ring gauge "smoke." These are big hits and I exhale them slowly for maximum enjoyment. At this level and volume of nic, I set the mod down, sometimes for long periods between hits.

What you're putting into your body is orders of magnitude cleaner than even cigar and pipe tobacco, but if you didn't inhale into the lungs, there's no reason to start now. The less the better.

please explain sub ohm or how you are doing that. i get lower ohms will heat the vape quicker. I just got an mvp 2 with ability to read ohms, change watts and volts. I thought using variable watts and cranking it up would create more vape. I just had a clearo on my ego so I put that on and dialed up watts and it tasted burnt. I think the clearo was like 2 ohms. the iclear30 is 2. somthing ohms, but I only have acidic juice so i can't use it, i'm going to order a pyrex tank today. but how do you lower ohms, or what tanks are sub ohm-age..

You're just going through a stage with the cigars. Everyone I have ever known who smoked more than one or two cigars a day hit that "wall" where everything tasted like crap. The only way around it is to lay off them for a few days.

As for cancer causing properties. Lip, throat, and other forms of oral cancer is a big possibility. Even "Pure" tobacco when burned produces carbon monoxide and cancer causing carcinogens. Ever had a cigar get loaded up and start tasting bitter or bad? That's tar build up. It happens because you are burning or smoking the cigar too fast and the tobacco wrapper is less porous than a cigarette wrapper so it has nowhere to go. If you've ever had to try and save a cigar where this occurred then you'll probably know about the process of using a cigar lighter and heating it up and trying to blow out the tar build up. It can also happen when you smoke a cigar that is too wet.

I believe it is pretty common knowledge nowadays that nicotine is about as harmful as caffeine and in low doses it is prescribed by doctors to treat depression, anxiety, and other illnesses. The big risk as I see it with e-cigarettes is the flavor ingredients. We really do not know what some of these vendors put in their recipes regardless of what they advertise. There are independent studies going on for e-cigarettes and e-liquids and many of those seem to produce results that prove e-cigarettes are about as harmful as drinking coffee every day.

I have known a lot of people who have had to give up cigars for health reasons. And I knew two who ended up with throat cancer due to cigars. Also, if you smoke indoors or around others the risk for cancer due to 2nd hand smoke is MORE dangerous than cigarettes due to sheer volume.

While better than cigarettes it is still tobacco. You are still at risk for several types of cancer. Burning just pure tobacco produces carbon monoxide which can cause cancer:

Cigar smokers who inhale are 6 times more likely to die from oral cancer and 39 times more likely to die from laryngeal cancers than nonsmokers.

I

I might still smoke a cigar occasionally, once a year or so, and only well aged Opus X or a Cuban Cohiba, but I do not have the time to invest in enjoying them on even a monthly basis anymore. I just have too much going on nowadays in my life. lol.

For a lot of us who smoke, i think the problem is moderation and that most of us can't moderate ourselves. Smoking a pipe or cigar now and then probably isn't going to kill you, but when you're consuming anything all day long, it's going to cause problems down the line. Hell, even drinking too much water can cause health issues.

And you can hit that same wall when vaping too. I have done it once or twice where something I am vaping just loses its flavor and I either have to lay off it or switch to a different brand/flavor.

Assuming the juice delivery device can take it:

Power = voltage squared / resistance

You can increase the power by increasing the voltage or lowering the resistance, either of which increases the current.

A clearomizer, whether top or bottom coil, or a disposable atomizer or cartomizer, can't take much power. You need a rebuildable atomizer (RBA), either a rebuildable dripping atomizer (RDA), or rebuildable tank-type atomizer (RTA), the latter either a top-coil type like a genesis or a bottom coil like a kayfun. Some refer to RTAs as just RBAs.

Regulated personal vaporizers (PVs) have electronic circuitry and can boost the voltage to increase the power, but their electronic switches can't handle higher current, so their power output is limited. I believe the MVP is limited to only five volts, where many can go to six volts. You need a mechanical PV, without electronic circuitry, to deliver power higher than 20 watts, about the best a regulated PV can do today.

Mechanical PVs or "mods" supply only the battery voltage, as much as only 4.2V fully charged. Battery voltage drops as the charge decreases. At this lower voltage, the way to get more power is to lower resistance. When you drop resistance to less than one ohm, it's said to be "sub-ohm." Current can be very high at this level of vaping and it's critical to use an unprotected, safer technology IMR battery, rated for a maximum continuous current greater than that your setup will be pulling. I personally don't recommend going below 1 ohm with anything less than an 18650 size battery.

It's also critical to ensure you don't and won't have a short circuit in your RBA, by measuring its resistance and ensuring a good quality build that won't come apart and short circuit. A shorted rechargeable battery can go into thermal runaway and vent violently. For that reason, it's critical your mechanical mod have good venting. Some mechanical mods, such as the REOs, have hot springs that will collapse and disconnect the battery in the event of an atomizer short circuit. Many don't. It becomes incumbent upon their user to note the heat of a short and get off the fire button ASAP. Regulated mods like your MVP check the resistance of the load before firing and will not fire a short. I believe your MVP won't fire anything below about 1.3Ω.

Mechanical mods and sub-ohmming are best done with some experience and electrical knowledge. For your MVP and clearos, stick to around 6-7 watts or less to avoid burning. I've been able to go as high as 8 watts in some cases.

I hope this helps.

thanks for responses, doug, I was actually going ok with the cigars still enjoying the good ones, but the tongue aftwerwards was bothering me. Abusing anything is the real issue and I was getting out of hand with it. shear habit etc. I am 0 nic on the vape so that's good. Yeah I wonder about the ingrediants being unregulated from different people. Will probably dabble DIY to control that aspect, but like you said, the cigars are so bad that anything has to be better than inhaling even second hand cigar smoke even outside right? nichog, thanks for the tutorial. Think I'll stick to the regulated box mod for now, if a disposable ecigar and ego occupied me relatively well back and forth to vegas the mvp should suffice on most daily drives home. Ordered an ibtanked, we'll see if that helps too.

In answer to your question OP, u state u bought 0 mg eLiquid, I'm assuming that is NO Nic. So I'll assume further that 0 mg Vape is like a billion times more healthier then smoking a cigar.

I too enjoy a nice Cigar noun fancy... when on vacation, this time around I'll be without it. I'm sure it'll feel like being naked on the beach listening to the oceans roar.

I've been a cigar smoker for over 40 years. As a matter of fact, I have worked in and managed cigar stores for about 20 years. I am not a cigarette user. Anyone who has knowledge of the matter is aware that there has been little, if any, serious health complaints issued by PREMIUM cigar smokers. I, for instance, have never had a health problem, and I average 3 to 5 sticks a day! Recently, however, I tried vaping when the store I help manage began selling a couple of products. In my research I started with disposable ecigs, to rechargeable Blu ecigs, to disposable e-cigars, to an EGO CE4, and now a Lavatube V2 clone ( thanks to a disreputable Chinese supplier ) (ask me and I'll give you their name ).
Anyway, I gotta say "I love it"! I just turned 66 last month and this old dog has learned a new trick. I still smoke cigars, of course, but now I usually limit it to 1 or 2 a day. The vaping satisfies me the rest of the time and the flavor varieties are refreshing. The taste of the e-cigars was disappointing, and I tried 4 different manufacturers. After reading your post I may experiment on a cigar juice myself.
Thanks much!
