iAtty sore throat when vaping, maybe too much juice on the wick/coil?

Hello guys,

this is my second wick/coil build since i got my iAtty, the first one was very impressive, after one week of normal use the coil failed, then i opened the iAtty and built a new coil, using the same NR and Resistance wire, just replaced the wick because it was so brittle (after i tried to clean with water and burned with a lighter).

I got 1.7 ohms with the new coil (i vape at 3.7 volts), what happen now is that it does not work like the first time, good vapor production but not the same TH i got before, and when i vape i feel like sore throat.

What i am thinking is that maybe the coil is getting too much juice, but i am not sure.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I get that as well when the wick is too wet with juice.

Finally i came home and opened my iAtty, i think the problem was not a bad connection or to much liquid on the coil, i think the problem was that the wick / coil area was with a lot or carbonized juice, had a lot of charred material on it that i could not clean it, when i was trying to clean it the coil and the wick broke.

I make a new coil and used one of the wick parts, this time i installed the coil and the wick on top of it (like the Imeo videos).

How is it working for you now Ariel?

It is working fine, but i found out today morning that there is charred material again. I am not sure now if it has to do with the juice or it is caused the wick is burned.

I am using TV Tobbaco juice, 80% PG and 20% VG. 3.7Volts @~2ohms.

Some ideas?

Ariel,

If you clean the wick does it all come off and leave a mostly white wick? If no then the wick may be burning which can happen if it isn't wicking well. I have to change my wick frequently when I use the stock wick. Every 1.5 days. However I did find I get less burning if I put a second piece or short wick on top of the main wick. I wrap the coil around both pieces of wick the top wick I cut very short and try to unbraid as much as I can. The bottom wick I put in the channels and tighten the cone down almost all the way over it. Then any wick sticking out I unbraid.

With ceramic wick I can get 3 days out of then I have to burn it to clean and I can use it again.

Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks fright, i will try your method :)

I can't clean the wick, i tried to clean it (dry burning with a lighter) several times but it broke apart, so i had to change for a new one (i am using the stock wick).

I have tried to put the wick over the coil (like i saw on Imeo videos), but same results. I seems that the stock wick is not that resistant to heat.

The ceramic wick you are using is the Nextel XC-116 one?

I read i can't buy it since export regulations or something like that :(

Last night i was doing some experimentation with the stock wick and ss 400 mesh, basically i did two things:

Oxidized a little piece of mesh in the stove (i do not have a butane torch), then i wrapped it to the wick.

I made a new coil and then i installed the wick with the ss mesh, on top of it, the result was not good at all, well, at least i think i found what is the reason that causes the sore throat:

The coil is not burning well the liquid.

Then i wrapped the resistant wire around the mesh (that is wrapped to the wick), like the original idea, but with mesh in the area where the coil makes contact. It works ok, i hope at least it will permit me to clean the charred material.

Some pics of my experiments:

A piece of wick that was over the coil, when i removed it, the coil broke (there was a lot charred material):

@gredie, thanks.

This is how i found the wick/coil after one day of vaping with TV Tobbaco juice (80%PG, 20VG%):

At least it permitted me to clean the wick and coil without any replacement. So i think that to wrap a mesh to the wick is a good idea.

I want to clarify that it does not imply that the TV Tobacco juice is bad one, i have read (thanks to lorderos33) that lowering the ohms can help to prevent this to happen.

I will try it.

By the way, i had the idea to use capillary tubes as a wick replacement, I couldn't find some yet, but Rick.45cal got some and i think he doing some testing with them, I hope he could get good results, and if so, maybe we will discover a new better method.

I will try to get some capillary tubes tomorrow to do some testing.

The doubled wick thing works for me as well; I use stacked tenergys until the hit falls off and then stack a couple 18350s for a few hits and it seems to burn off the carbonization for me (ferocious hit but it starts tasting burnt after 3 or 4 hits) but I am just experimenting like everone else.

I can't find a kiln, my buddy's doesn't get hot enough -- will anyone fire up my XC-116 if I send it to them, please? :)
