I think the b is a bottom coil (the coil is on the bottom under the juice) and the d is a top coil (with wicks drawing the juice up).

I have no idea how bottom coils avoid the juice just filling up the air passage and giving you a mouth full of juice but they do.

I personally prefer the EVODs to the iclears.

A vacuum builds in the tank keeping the juice from flowing. As the juice evaporates the wick dries and allows air to be pulled back into the tank which releases a little juice back into the wick. It won't overflow unless the vacuum is broken.
