Finally I licked the Patriot rda! I wound a coil on a wood screw to keep the coils spaced about 1mm apart. 5 wraps came out to a whopping 2.5 ohm using 32g kanthal. Threaded 2 strands of 3mm silica through the coil and then in wound them so it becomes more fluffy like a loose wick instead of a rope. The Vape could definitely be more dense. I plan on adding another in the same fashion. But the point was I actually like it! I have made several builds on it that produced some terrible vape harsh acidic way too hot or wick burners. On a whim I made this huge loose coil and it is producing about equal to a nautilus.

Maybe I wasn't clear this is working beautifully. I added the same exact coil on the other post and it is nice and dense. No burnt or nastiness. Yes threading silica is a burger on a compressed coil. With the large spacing it was easy to hold the coil still and rotate the silica up the coil like an Archimedes screw. Unwinding it allowed it to move juice faster than the twisted hard rope. I got the idea from the loose silica fibers used by Kanger and Aspire. With the fluffed up silica wick it almost flows as fast as cotton but doesn't burn like cotton when it gets close to dry. The vapor production drops off and I know it's to to drop a few more.

I agree. I was against Cotton cause I had tried it before, but got really bad flavor.

Make sure it is 100% Sterile Cotton
There is no need to do anything to it, unravel it carefully, roll it loosely
and use it as loose as possible.

Best flavors I have gotten.

Do not use plain cotton balls or other cotton, or yarn.

I have a ton of Silica, but recently tried cotton again, in my new KayFun 3.1
Only place I will use Silica is in my ViVi Nova Mini Rebuilds.

Try drilling out another hole on it. Since the patriot is a dual coil system with only one air hole it has a tendency to get much hotter. I drilled a second hole on mine, (right where the logo was but if you like the logo I wouldn't then) and it has become my favourite rda

Roger the hole. Did that as soon as I got it. My logo is 90 degrees from the original hole. So I added a second hole 180 from original. I put the holes at the coils. The thing I don't like about the cotton is the taste of burnt cotton. Does echo wool not have a foul taste when it starts to run dry?

You must have a mutant one or something. Mine is a true Patriot and has an air hole on each side of the logo. Not the biggest, but sufficient. One of my buddies has a clone and it has 2 also.

NA ..... Just get a bigger hammer.

Nothing wrong with silica wicks. Silica or cotton is just a matter of personal choice. It's the coil that turns the liquid into a vapor .. not the wick. So if your wicks get enough liquid to the coil, (and don't alter flavor) that's all they need to do.

I have about 300 ft of 0.8mm silica laying around, so that's what I use. My normal builds are to wrap the coil around either 3 or 4 strands (depending) + a stiff wire about the size of a small paper clip, and then dry burn & pinch the wraps together micro coil fashion.
It's just that I've had wicks & coils last for a couple of months or longer with nothing more than a dry burn every week or so when wrapped this way.
The only problem I have with my wicks & coils is that they last so long that I forget what ga. wire I used and the number of wraps I used. (at my age I suffer from 'halftimmers)

Take the top leg and wrap it over cotton.

To clarify, you remove the filling wedged in between and keep the other piece to hold the coil together right? Also, what kind of kanthal and how many wraps did you do?

    Thanks!

Look at the pics. So the only thing kept when you pullout the little sock that holds the duel coils in place is the sock. The inside will have fill material between a metal retainer. Leave that in place. Wrap your coil on a thick metal hanger like you get from the cleaners. Exact diameter needed. To have a big central air vertical coil.
