Make sure you're not cross-threading them too. When you put the battery in, turn it a time or two backwards (counter-clockwise) to make sure the battery is resting flat against the threads; Then tighten down to the point it connects and the LED blinks a few times, no need to crank it down until it won't turn any longer.

My 901 batteries are finicky about going into the charger - I always have to futz with them before they'll screw in correctly. But none of my 510s, in any of my chargers, give me any problems. When the LED starts blinking I know they have contact, and I just tighten them down until it begins to feel firm.

I have to agree with Chef;
I screw my batts in until the LED turns red. That's it, I stop. Sometimes they might even be loose, but they charge just fine as long as the connection is made.

Exactly, i know that my 510 charge is different from my m201 and m401 chargers. The center contact on the charger is a plate with a spring. Screw it in until the light changes and give it a lucky half turn. It will be pretty loose still but like jim davis said. As long as it's making contact.
