im about to mash my RSST

i have built a regular coil, micro coil, even a nano from 1.8 ohms to 1.0 ohms. i have also frilled the air hole to 3/32. i thought i was doing good until today when i had to go back to 6mg nicotine and damn the throat hit is about to kill me. im running it on a SVD. same juice in a stock protank and all is good with no TH. i have a cotton wick and also tried cotton in the chamber to reduce chamber size but its not helping. someone has to have ran into this problem before.

The throat hit on a RSST, or other Genesis Style atty is going to be quite a bit stronger/harder than that of a Protank due to design. That's why a lot of people like the RSST . Building a micro-coil and using cotton is only going to amplify it as a micro-coil covers more of the wick (increased surface area) so there's a higher concentration of heat to burn a higher level of juice.

When it comes to atty's like the RSST, most have to step their juice down because the throat hit is so much "harder" on them. For me, I had to move from 12mg down to 8mg, which doesn't seem like much, but it's a world of difference. Now days, I vape 12mg on pretty much all setups because I enjoy the throat hit.

If you don't like as much, a higher VG juice will help, as will using a normal higher ohm coil. That said, larger air holes also assist with throat hit as well. More air = more vapor = more throat hit unless you're using 0mg or a high VG juice.

Please don't take this wrong, but I always get confused when I hear of people not liking a genesis when they are using cotton. I'm always thinking, "well that does sound nasty, of course it sucks" because that's not how you build a genesis. Have you tried a proper mesh build?

Mesh isn't the only way to build on a genesis; many (including myself) build with cotton and they work perfectly fine. I've built using mesh, cotton wrapped mesh, mesh with a cotton center etc. Mesh is nice, but to be honest, it takes more effort than it's worth and the cost is substantially higher. They may last a little longer, since it's a solid piece, but it takes maybe 5 seconds to swap out the cotton on a build. I'm not saying not to use mesh, it has it's uses, but cotton just works.

That said, even with a mesh build, the throat hit is still going to be stronger coming from a Genesis atty than it is a Protank, or similar device due to the build of the atty.

What about your mesh build made you think that you needed to toss it and use cotton? I use cotton in a couple of devices but I've never enjoyed it in a genny when compared to mesh.

That's just the RSST's massive top cap. I was running a .8 ohm 450 mesh wick in mine and the flavor was awesome, but I had the topcap packed with cotton.

I don't get the 0 nic thing unless its like my .24 ohm cloud machine. I only put pure glycerin in that one, but I just had 12 mg in my RSST with a cotton micro and it wasn't all that bad. My trick is to stay above 75% vg with cotton and micro's. I feel like its gonna knock my throat out the back of my neck at 50/50. lol

Well . .there's harsh throat hit from high nic but that's usually not a "killing me" type of throat hit. Having your airflow in the wrong position can make the vape pretty harsh . .but if your air hole is lined up with the coil then my guess is maybe hot legs/spots in your coil. Drip some juice and fire your coil for a good long time, like 10 seconds, while blowing on it and make sure no part of it starts to glow red. Sometimes my coils will stay dark for 5+ seconds and then a tiny bit of red starts to glow on the underside of the coil or where it attaches to the post. That tastes nasty.

I like using cotton as well.... I even rebuild my ProTank 2 coils with cotton. It's just, in my opinion, a much better vape.

Use this method...works almost every time...very hard to mess up




1. Burn it until it is jet black, I usually hold in the fire of a stove till it glows red, then cool, repeat 3x times (there is another method to pulse fire to burn it, but that method kicks my .... so I go the failsafe "old school" method)

2. I take 32gauge wire, stick a paperclip bent into a hook on a drill, fold the wire in half, hold loose end with pliers, twist it till it snaps (usually breaks at the loop), take the wire, burn it, glow red cool, wrap 5-6 times for around 1.5Ω-1.7Ω, 7-8 for 1.8Ω-2.0Ω (I use APV's or kicks so I don't need low ohms they won't fire low ohms) (for some reason twisting the wire almost eliminates the hot wire between the coil and the positive center pin]
I run my AGA-T2 and I-Atty at 8 watts, it takes a second to get rolling but once warm..vape city!
30ga twisted the same way, I had to run 12 wraps to get it to 1.6Ω, so if you are shooting for high sub ohm or right at 1Ω then twisted 30ga and 6-7 wrapps will put you at .8Ω-1.0Ω...know your hardware before you sub ohm!
