I have both ProTanks and both Davides. Every time I finish a tank no matter the size of tank or color of juice, I take the coil head and soak in alcohol over night. Always use freshly cleaned coil head in freshly cleaned tank. Rotated four coils over four mos. Just now starting to replace with new heads.
If I use a darker, sweeter juice in the larger tank, I might start near the end of the tank full to get a burnt taste. It only takes one pull to recognise the taste. I'll immediately take out the coil, put it in alcohol and put a freshly cleaned one in.
Even if I refill the same tank with the same juice, will put in a fresh coil.
I do not use water on coils and wicks. Takes longer to dry out. Just use alcohol. The electronic techie guys use a high percentage alcohol 97-99% to clean their equipment because of the fast drying ability. Ever Clear is one brand I've read about, but not in my local liquor store. Got another brand and it's doing fine. The alcohol gets rather discolored over a week's time. Dump it out and replace with fresh. Don't even try drinking the stuff!
