I'm new and pretty sure LR attys DO kill Rivas

The only thing I have noticed using the LR atty on a eGo battery is the batt does not last as long per charge (I expected this for obvious reasons).

Regardless, if this means I need new batts every 6 months instead of every 12 months then so be it. IMHO, there is no good reason to stop using the LRs. Why would I want to quit having the best vaping experience?

With LR attys, the batteries used in eGo/Riva devices are somewhat stressed.

The current demand of LR attys exceeds the "max drain rate" of ICR batteries of that size. It's not totally out of bounds, but they are being pressed to deliver more amps than they're built to. Abusing a battery with ICR chemistry in this way will cause the battery to degrade faster than it would otherwise. Its internal resistance will increase over time. As that internal resistance increases, its ability to provide the amps required will decrease. At some point, the battery will no longer be able to provide a satisfying vape despite being able to hold a charge. The battery will be able to store electrical power, but not release it fast enough to power the LR atty.

The long and short of it is that eGo and Riva batteries won't last as many recharge cycles when used with LR attys. This is why IMR chemistry (in this size battery) is a better choice for LR attys.

Hmmm remember stuff was gifted. Or did you kill a brand new battery you bought as well?

Just saying. Batteries may have been 'old' when you got them.

My best guess is that in an effort to get maximum use out of each mAh of tiny battery (yes I've got a 'real' batt and wouldnt go back even to my beloved mega 510 unless confiscated by police for looking like a bomb or lost) I think the 'protection' circuits dont cut off soon enough. With regular atty/carto shouldnt be an issue (they were presumably designed for the regular ohm rating) with a LR atty you are turning the smooth drop from 4.2 to coasting around 3.2 till dropping to cuttoff to a more sharp drop. This can push the battery too far before the cutoff kicks in damaging battery. Presumably this would occur over time and be more a factor of full charge/full discharge/full charge cycle being harder on chemistry to begin with, but could conceivably push the 'safety' circuit into 'lockdown'??

Again all pure conjecture on my part since I've never actually seen an eGo. But was very grateful my Mod arrived soon after my starter batteries went silly on me. Nothing worse than a self activating battery. Everything's kosher until you see a bright led shining on the desk and here a sizzling noise.

But it makes some sense. There are always tradeoffs between optimal operation and best performance. Easiest way to squeeze performance out of battery is to charge to 4.2V and run it as low as is safe. Where as optimal operation would charge to 3.?V and cut off as soon as below 3.?V. But battery wouldnt 'last' as long between charges and the little ones dont last very long to begin with. And most sites are very clear that your battery may suffer if you LR it.

There's even an outside chance if I fall in love with the LR Cartos I've got coming that I'll need to upgrade my ICR 1600 mAh batt to an IMR 1400 mAh. So really think the stock batteries are an iffy proposition (although to each his own)

dlbald, interesting link. Wondering what that stuff is at the bottom on the atty chamber in the close up pic showing the bridge. Looks like glue? Any idea?

How are they performing for you so far?

I did not notice the "stuff " at the bottom until you mentioned it. I got out one of my unused ones and really had to look for the stuff. In the picture it appears white, but in my atty it is clear and colorless and is barely perceptible. Glue? Maybe...IDK  I suppose something has to keep the ring in place.

It does use more juice and the batteries probably do not last as long. BUT as long as you keep the wick wet it has great flavor and vapor. :p

BTW, the cart on it is a dummy. Only good for looks or dripping. I had to question Levy about it via e-mail.

Search for info on Levy Roberts or Xtreme Vaping on ECF. You will find a lot of praise for his service and products.

I just read your OP (original post)...

Then larktdl and VaporMadness, any ideas on what could have caused 3 Rivas and 2 Egos all to short circuit in 60 days?

Because I'd really like it to NOT be the LR atty lol. Much better vape then the regular attys.

You bet!

Same series of events each instance. Vaping normally, everything functioning fine, when the battery suddenly doesn't shut off after a drag when I release the button. I am SURE it is hitting at much higher volts then normal when this happens as the atomizer heats up fast to the point of giving you a severe burn if you try to touch it after 5 seconds or so. If you ever try to screw an atty onto the battery again it fires upon contact until the battery dies, which happens almost immediately, even in the case of a fresh charged battery shorting. After it flashes and dies it either remains green on the charger forever or remains red (without the pre-charge flash sequence) forever. Kaputt.

This sounds like the switch has failed on you and is stuck in the closed position. Nothing at all related to the actual battery chemistry. As you say, the battery is cranking and it won't shut off. That just sucks to have a perfectly good batt and no good way to use it. I don't know that an LR atty could induce that kind of failure.

IDK, I'd suggest getting a MOD with a reliable switch or an easily replaced switch should the switch go out on you. Actually if you get a MOD you'll also get a boost in power since the eGo/Riva gizmos are regulated down a bit in voltage. Chances are you'll like that too. 2 ohm attys on a full 3.7v power source is my cup of tea.

A lot of folks really like the eGo/Riva/Hello all-in-one gizmos... but for me... the body, the switch, and the battery, and the protection circuitry (if any) are all separate components. If one goes out, I like the option of replacing just that one instead of getting all new everything every time one goes out.

I have a Chameleon, it costs $0.15 to replace the switch (i have a baggie of 14) and a new IMR battery is $7 (don't expect to need a new one for a year). That's a way better deal then $20 for a new eGo/Riva batt. Soon I'm getting a Precise16, its stainless steel switch should outlive me.

YMMV

Gizmos. That's funny.

I'm with you Vapor Madness on the separate component features being preferable rather then the all in one design. My back up PV is the indulgence which has this design, and although the vape is not as good as the Riva at the low voltage the 6V adaption makes up for it.

So. Ok. I'm getting dangerously brave and considering going back LR on the Riva.

My memory aint THAT great so it's POSSIBLE that the SAME LR atty killed all 5 and that particular atty was to blame not the combo of LR+Riva(Ego) since I seem to be the only one with this particular shorting out problem. I KNOW I used the same atty on the last 2 that died within hours of each other, the details get fuzzy prior to that.

Wish me luck. I'm going in.

I swear to god if I kill one more $23 battery with this ima kick myself from here to next Tuesday. And I'll deserve it too.

Even rats stop taking the cheese after say 3 electric shocks. Sigh.

You may want to spend a couple of bucks on a multi-meter and check the resistance on the atty in question. This is why I love battery mods. The batts are cheap to replace.

What color are your dead Rivas.... how old are they.. and what are you doing to do with the corpses?

Yes.. I'm getting to something here.

2 dead black Rivas (gold fittings) 2 dead black Egos (silver fittings).

The 3rd Riva seems to have wandered off (???)

They were all aquired by me sometime between April and June of this year. Where they came from and how old they were once they were received in my hot little hands is anyone's guess. Whoever mentioned that they might have been old when they were gifted to me, sure, possible. I don't look gift horses in the mouth and the gifts were still extremely generous and big hearted.

They are going to sit here on my shelf and think about what they have done until they have decided to change their useless ways.

Do tell Scottbee.

I read that and I'm starting to doubt my proclamation. I'm ITCHING to attach this brand new LR atty to my brand new pristine Riva...

I think there's merit to what he's saying..

I also think that if the LR is THAT much better, do it anyway .. it doesn't cost a fortune to replace batteries now and again :)

It's not big deal. I have the ability to "raise these suckers from the dead"... although it takes a bit of work and some magical powers. I've been known to tomb raid and purchase corpses of Rivas with low miles and known pedigrees.

Lol, "low miles and known pedigrees".

You can just have them if you want to pay for postage.

Any chance that you are letting the atty get to dry?

Maybe the atty is getting to hot because it is to dry, this causes battery and atty malfunction. Just a guess.

One other thing I have noticed: In cases when the LR atty dies and I switch to another atty the battery needs a recharge. I wonder if this is causing battery failure/malfunction. So far for me this scenario has not caused a battery to fail but I wonder if a dying/dead atty is the culprit. Kinda of like a power surge ... causes electrical equipment to fail/malfunction.
