Welcome to the ECForums! One thing you will find is that if you ask an opinion for hardware and liquids you will get the same number of opinions as there are hardware and vaping set-ups <g>.
I suggest you let people know what type of smoking you do now (where you smoke, chain smoking, smoking as a habit, nic addiction, relaxing, ritualistic, etc.), which can help you make a choice as to the hardware you may use to start vaping. I think there is a thread on the New Member Forum about lifestyle and hardware usage.
As for types of liquids, be sure to check some of the stickies about tobacco/cig flavors. Many times people will find that vaping is completely different. For me, I hated menthol cigs but loved (and still love) menthol for vaping. You might consider if you like sweets, mints, raw tobacco, etc. and something is probably available to try.
The best advice I can give is to succumb to the paralysis of analysis. Though it sounds trite, I think it is something many of us forget when considering taking up vaping.
I think it is something about the apparent "permanence" of e-cig hardware that makes us forget that after smoking carton of cigs all you are left with is a bunch of ashes and butts. We spend a similar amount of money to buy another carton that goes the same way. Most smokers wouldn't think twice about shelling out money for an additional carton of cigs if the one they had just bought was dropped in a puddle of water (maybe a bit hacked, but they would still buy it).
Look around, ask questions, then give it a try. Sorry for he long post-- just got off the phone with my sister-in-law (chain-smoker of 1 1/2 cartons per week) on her fourth week not buying an e-cig set-up for fear it won't be "right."
