I am not new to rebuilding, but fairly new to rebuilding on an rta with a build deck.I am currently recoiling non rebuildable melo 2 coil heads that I get in the packs and gut them out and build a horizontal coil using 24 gauge kanthal wrapped around a 2.4mm screwdriver which comes
out to around .60 ohms, and I vape at around 18.5 watts.

Why do I do this you ask?? Because the flavor is tasty and excellent.
But My problem is the rubber grommets are spliting apart because of the thick 24 gauge.
So I decided to buy an actual Rta. First one is Kangertech mini Rta, used the same wire gauge same cotton same juice, same ohms, no flavor.Fiddled with it for a few days nada,So I went back to the Melo tank and coils,Then I read about the serpent mini and its great flavor,
got it 2 days ago,Once again Used the same gauge kanthal, cotton, juice ect and once again no flavor Hot air Stale beer taste.

Are these rta's not able to produce good flavor using a single coil of 24 gauge kanthal wrapped to .60 ohms 2.4mm diameter?? The Melo 2 setup is not translating to the Kanger Mini rta or the serpent mini
for some reason in great flavor, same vapor though but not taste.I dont get it?

Only thing I can think of is the coil in the melo coil is free floating with a lot of space above and below it,Giving it great flavor.I don't know. This is a bummer as I have two Rta's but not getting flavor? I also don't want to get crazy with funky coils so I have to jack up the watts to 30 and burn up juice and batteries in 10 min I want to use what I have in the melo setup and vape at lower watts.

Uh.

There are cloud chasers and flavor chasers.

If you want favor here are tge best flavor RTAs i have used

Silverplay nano
Goblin Mini
Orchid V3
Kayfun with 25 mm tall bell cap
Ohmega Nano
Standard Kayfun Lite Plus

Everyone was hyping the Billow V2 as great flsvor. I gey great flavir with my KKayfun with 25 mm tall bellcap at 8-10 watts but the Billow V2 i went all the way to 40 watts abd couldn't find any flavor.

I have used both the Serpent Mini and Kanger Subtanks both with quite satisfying flavor results. By your "no flavor Hot air Stale beer taste" results it sounds like you are getting dry hits, or not enough air for the coil/power.

What works in a vertical coil doesn't necessarily work in a horizontal coil. Like Two_Bears said try thinner wire, change coil placement and diameter, and don't pack the cotton too tight in the juice channels. Try watching a few YouTube videos on the specific tanks you are using and see how other people build and wick the tanks.

Good luck!

Oh no, this leaves an opening for many subjective views.... ;) here's mine:

In my personal quest for flavour and vapour, I found that the Avocado 24 came top trumps. This may not be to everyones taste, so to speak, but I used to use my Cleito (regular size) as a daily driver for about 6 months and was happy with both the flavour and the vape production...but I wanted more!
Paying for the coils was becoming a royal PITA and having to keep changing them to keep the flavour I desired, also. So i decided to go the RDTA route.

Tried Smoks TF-RDA...leaked as soon as it was built!
Then got an exchange for Smoks TF-RDTA...was awesome up until the point it melted the insulator! Ffs Smok, plastic..really?!

Went back between my original iSub G and Cleito but they just didnt cut the mustard since using the TF-RDTA. So researched reviews and everything pointed to Avocado 24. I seriously do not regret it and would highly recommend it to any flavour or cloud chasers.

Back on track:
Vaping at lower Watts means higher resistance coils. For flavour to carry through you would need to sacrifice a bit of time and battery...and go sub-ohm building.
I get great flavour from a single coil set up in my Avocado. Its at 0.51 ohm (twisted 24g kanthal A1, 3mm id single coil), so not a battery slammer and i vape at 41-47 Watts on a kbox200. I have four batteries and charge 2 whilst using 2. The world seems such a happier place since having this set up ;) and charging every 1.33 days is fine for me but its all depending on how you vape.

Juices can have an influence too, some respond better to different temps/wattage/airflow.

All i have said is what works for me moving from rta's to rdta's, they may not be your cup of tea, but its a move i dont regret.

Dems my views and experience, food for thought ;)

What I mean by that is it seems to be void of sweetness I'm used to from the melo ,Also I'm not getting dry hits,Vapor production is fine just not great flavor.

What works in a vertical coil doesn't necessarily work in a horizontal coil. Like !

When I recoiled the melo premade coils they were originally vertical but my recoiling is horizontal.

Probably going to have to go the clapton coil route to get flavor from these Rta's which something I didnt want to do.

When I told people on forums that I was rebuilding melo coil heads they said your nuts get an RTA,So far melo wins.

This will all be subjective as far as flavor, but all I can say is to just keep at it and keep experimenting. Different builds, different ways of wicking, it all plays a part.

I don't know why, and maybe I'm crazy, but sometimes after getting a new tank, I don't taste anything. Zero flavor. Then, little by little, I get it. It's like the longer I use a tank, the more flavorful it becomes - no idea why. And with the same build too, it's not like I'm experimenting with different builds, just my regular go-to build (and no, it's not cotton break-in, it's just the way it works.)

You can definitely mess with clapton wire, that may help, but shouldn't be necessary. Personally (and this will be VERY subjective) I don't get any better/worse flavor with clapton wire. Makes no difference for me. Just burns up batteries faster and provides a warmer vape (which is why I use them.)

Best advice I could give you, would be to try spaced coils, if you weren't already. That made a major difference for me.

Could be a placebo effect,or your not vaping side by side to another tank with flavor. If the Serpent tank was the only thing I was vaping on I could see this,But I am also vaping on a flavorfull tank.

I haven't but will give it a try,Thanks.
