I'm so encouraged by the number of successful quit stories on here!

I've been reading through the forum and I'm delighted and amazed to see how many people report they've given up cigarette smoking completely since starting to vape. It was interesting that when I popsted about this on a differenct, unrelated forum, to inquire if anyone was into e-cigs instead of analogs, a lot of people wrote that they did not believe vaping could/should be represented as a viable remedy to achieve smoking cessation. Apparently, even vendors are cautioned against making claims that use of the product can help quitters quit? Yet all it takes is a few days of reading right here to see that there are MANY successes!

It seems to me that this forum could be extremely helpful; gathering hard data from real life vapers so that an accurate report could be published would be fantastic! I think the medical community as well as those who are looking for help to quit (beyond gum, patches and pharmaceutical drugs) might be very interested in seeing some real numbers! Has this been looked into at all? A series of simple surveys here at ECF would go a long way toward providing great self-report study data, which certainly has its place in scientific research.

The problem with collecting data here is that there is a selection bias. The people who tend to actively posting here and using the site are those that had success, for the most part.

That being said, there have been some surveys (or at least one) where participants were recruited here. They can provide useful and valid information, but the selection bias has to be taken into account.

My own story... I smoked for almost 25 years. Tried many other ways to quit. Could probably put a child through college with the money I spent on nicotine gum. I got an ecig and stopped smoking almost immediately (I think I had a total of 3 partial cigarettes after I got my first ecig). I'll be coming up on two years smoke free in August of this year, and have decreased my nicotine quite a bit from where I started. They definitely worked for me, and having read a lot of the research I'm pretty much convinced they are orders of magnitude less harmful than cigarettes.

I have been analog free since I purchased my first kit. I have't wanted or needed a stinky since I started vaping. I can quit analogs and no longer have to separate myself from friends who do still smoke cigarettes. It is a great feeling of freedom and success. I don't have one single regret...well...maybe one, which would be not starting sooner. Even my husband is happily vaping and no longer needing to smoke the stinkies.

Yup, half pack smoker for twenty years. Smoked my last .... Saturday afternoon and have no desire to have another. I have more energy, my head is clearer and I dont smell like an ashtray. Not to mention cheaper.

You know even if it is marginally less harmful it is still a much better alternative to BT.

I am spreading the word to my smoker friends. If you want to give the finger to BT and high taxes. Vaping is the way to go!

Here is to more success stories.

Doctors should be prescribing the E-cig to each smoking patient they have. for a starter kit and caost of around 40 bucks (initial investment) with 30ml of generic tobacco e-juice with nicotine our healthcare system could be saved billions. My doctor gave me about 20 sample packs of nicotine gum a few years back, almost had a heart attack from overdosing on gum! a pack of nicotine gum is about the same cost as a single ego starter kit. go figure.

1. Vendors are legally prohibited from making any claim of "theraputic effect" including, cessation of smoking. They can't say this but most people here on ecf know it's true.

2. CASAA is collecting success stories, so this has been done to an extent. They also have a survey over there that can and should be taken by all vapers.

3. Are you a vaper or just a casual observer?

Here's why vaping works and the other options don't:

Vaping is just the all around superior experience. It tastes better than smoking, it provides a nicotine hit, it allows for the hand to mouth habit and feel, it CAN be cheaper, and it's focus is on enjoyment rather than on punishment or deprivation.

Three months analog free for me now.
I started mainly to save money, in the UK even the cheapest smokes are over £7 a packet - what's that in dollars, I guess about $11.

Knew a few people that had tried e-cigs, so I thought why not. Bought an ego starter kit, enjoyed it and didn't realise I was cutting down so much on the stinkies.

After about a month, got up one morning at 5am for an early shift, had 1 analog left in the pack, smoked it and thought lets see how long I can go without a ciggy.

The rest is history. At least I know now, I'll be around long enough to see a bit more history un-folding :D

THIS

I've been battling between lozenges and limiting my smoking to a specific day of the week (I would destroy a pack and then some) for 2 years now. The other 6 days each week were filled with lozenges and a strong grip tugging but I got really good at fending it off waiting for "my day" each week. It became a huge burden on my overall mental state.

MY wife has struggled for years too but has had much better will power overall. We both ALWAYS wanted to smoke together the last few years but age, kids, and length of time that we did smoke is just a scary proposition to go back to "all in".

Tried it all: wellbutrin (really helped go cold turkey for a year but the side effects for me were bad. Messed with my sleep too much among other things). Lozenges. Gum. Cheap cigars (because they weren't "analogs" lol). Cold turkey.

The only times that I felt "myself" was when I smoked and it certainly wasn't just nicotine. Wife and I are happily vaping with zero desire for any nrt or analogs. My best friend who smoked for 30 years straight quit on a dime. His wife who only smoked 5-10 a day or so has zero interest ever going back. She too tried patches and other nrt stuff but nothing worked even though she was a light smoker compared to many.

Ecigs are an incredibly powerful and effective way to get away from analogs faster than your first cartomizer. Never seen anything like it and I've seen way way too many people try and fail and try and fail and try and fail.

The unknowns of ecigs seem to make smokers seriously worry about the risks of vaping. There is serious irony there. If you smoke you are already a very serious risk taker. Every smoker knows how it ends if they don't stop unless you are that 1 in a 10,000 lucky uncle who smoked 2 packs of unfiltered chesterfields for 60 years and lived to 90.

Thanks for this info. I saw this article and it got me thinking that valuable (at least anecdotal) information is not being calculated. More people are smoking e-cigarettes, but as a quitting tool, they may be all smoke and mirrors - NY Daily News

To answer your question, I am a long time menthol smoker about to make the switch, and finding a lot of encouragement as well as good advice here.
