Although I haven't read through every post on the new members forum, I imagine there are several stories similar to mine. I've been smoking regularly for 25 years, started when I was 15. A lot of my friends smoked and we all thought it was a grand time. Many of these friends went on to various professions, medical, dental, law, etc as did I. However I was the only one left with the habit. Mind you that when we get together from time to time, we will enjoy a smoke for old times sake.
Once college was over and I entered into my doctorate program, I considered quitting so as not to offend fellow students, professors, or patients. Well that didn't work! The stress of that level of education plus the release of that stress at various local bars and partys contributed further to prolonging my habit. My education beyond high school was an additional 12 years before I started practice, all the while smoking 1-1/2 packs a day. Essentially I existed in a world where smoking was quite frowned upon, guilt and shame ensued. Having to be careful about only smoking in certain clothes, frequent and odd hour bathings, etc. to get the stink off.
Once I started practice, I immediately found an awesome and beautiful woman to marry me and we pumped out 3 kids in succession.... smoking all the while. Now that I have a consistent professional and family life, I have found that there is tremendous stress to incorporate smoking a pack a day in this lifestyle. In fact I have never really considered quitting. Until now.
My mother, who smokes heavily, had a fifty-one ecig that they sell in the mall. I had heard of ecigs and thought that might be cool to try one day. Well she let me give it a try and I was astonished. Normally I do a fair bit of research before I take the plunge. But I went straight to the mall and plopped down $170 for the starter kit. Not knowing anything at the time, I thought it was just great.Over the next 2 days I realized the batteries were inconsistent, the cartomizers were difficult to get a consistent pull, and they didn't taste all that great. Subsequent and heavy reading on these forums and elsewhere has allowed me to find the right things I should have started with. but hey I haven't smoked an analog in 9 days. Those 51's started me on the path that has truly changed my life. I will give them that much.

Over the past week I have procured an eGo pass thru, a Silver Bullet with LR attys, variety of cartomizers and juices. I'm really enjoying the SB, LR atty, and flucured altliquid.

My family is excited for me and I have even converted 3 heavy smoking friends to give it a shot.

This may sound a little nerdy, but this is a real life changer for someone like me.

Congratulations on making the switch. These things are truly life savers, I know I owe my life to e-cigs (smoking never caused me any health problems, but I knew it was just a matter of time - you can't smoke for 25 years and not worry about it).

Finding e-cigs has been like having a new lease on life. Good luck in your vaping journey.

Welcome aboard Doc.
Wait till you get your hands on an all-day mod. The technology is making leaps and bounds every month, and till they find a way to nail us with mondo taxes, the whole vaping experience is literally getting down to pennies per day...these days you can truly get an all day solution in packages no larger than your old pack of cigs w/lighter.

Congrats!
I second the 'all day' reccommendation that Credo makes. I also started with a mall-bought PoS, but found it lacking. i've since moved to an Echo (1300mah battery) and can get into a 3rd day of vaping on the same battery (Might need a 2nd carto, though - I usually swap between 3-4, so I can't tell).

And only 12 years of post-secondary? Pfft. My wife did 16. :p (I kid. I've seen the stress it produces. I'm amazed that grad students don't leave with *more* addictions...)

Hi sidney, I enjoyed reading your post. It was a great decision to start doing this and it is definitely a LIFE CHANGING experience for us all. I am only 25, but it's been a big life change for the better and I'm glad I decided to make the switch early but I was already smoking for 10 years.

Almost all of us made that initial bad decision with little research when we first started. I did the same thing as I just wanted to get my hands on one as soon as possible and bought a crappy disposable e-cig from a gas station. Like you though, my next thing was an Ego and I absolutely love it. I use it day to day either direct dripping or using cartomizers or clearos.

Congratulations on staying smoke free for the 9-days, that is a great accomplishment. If you ever need support we all are here, and I'm sure you're family is backing you as well. Happy vaping!

HI Sidney,
Congratulations! My husband and I both emptied our wallets at a booth in the mall, but in retrospect it is noting in comparison to the cash we were shellin out for death sticks. Whatever it takes to get you started, whatever you spent... all worth it, cause now your here. Happier healthier future, happy kids, and converting all your friends is just fun. I have several friends who are giving it a shot. If I could only make a job of it! Best of luck to you and Welcome to the wonderful world of Vape.

You guys are awesome! Thanks for the encouragement.

Today I went to a local tobacco retailer to view their selection of ecigs, etc. I have to say it was a little scary. The selection was terrible and scant. The woman behind the counter asked me a few questions about my experience so far to which I replied that it was going quite well. I proceeded to tell her that I wish I would have discovered this sooner and I am hoping to maintain it. She told me , "I would sit at the computer all day, watch Netflix movies, and constantly smoke my ecig. After 6 months I went back to cigarettes because I was using it so much" While I appreciated, to an extent, her honesty and candor it let a little wind out of my sails. I know they are out there, but I havent come across anyone that has quit vaping and gone completely back to analogs.

I agree with you, it's good she was being honest... but I don't care how much someone vapes because IMO it's nowhere near as bad as going back to analogs. If I never took the PV away from my mouth at home it would still be so much better than smoke going into lungs.

I think she was being half honest, I think a part of her just wanted to smoke again and is using her own excuse of vaping too much to go back. I still get craves to smoke after a month, but I just suck on my PV till it goes away. It may be something that never goes away completely from what I hear... but I know I will never submit to it again.
