The only things I know about e-cigarettes are that they seem to be a way better idea than smoking real cigarettes and that there seem to be a lot of options. I've been smoking Marlboro Lights for over 20 years (2 packs a day +) and want to switch to e-cigarettes. I'm hoping someone can tell me what I need (that will last for some time) to get started, maybe who and what to buy from online, and something that might be comparative to the drags I feel off my cigarettes? Thank you, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Sibby! And welcome to ECF!

As a relative newcomer the best advice I can give you is to go to the ECF Library and read all about vaping. Also, read the FAQ section.

I'm not going to start telling you what might or might not work for you...I'm still learning too!

But things I do know is that everryone is different...do a lot of research before you make your first purchase. Don't worry if it takes you a month! Making an educated choice will save you money in the long run. You will find a WEALTH of info right here in this forum, and lot's of people who can answer your questions!

I have a Joye eGo set and I am very happy. I vape constantly and the battery lasts all day on a single charge, and I switch out for the freshly charged one in the evening. There are many advertised on the Internet, but they don't compare, and are much more expensive.

If you want an eGo, I would highly recommend that you order your genuine Joye eGo kit from NicotineNirvana.com. Their REGULAR price for the dual kit is $74.99 delivered, but right now if you enter the coupon code ecfego10 the price is $67.49 DELIVERED.

Everything on the NicotineNirvana website is free shipping. I also highly recommend their US-made American Blend e-liquid, if you like real tobacco taste. I've ordered from NicotineNirvana 4 times. Always flawless customer service and FAST shipping.

I got my eGo about a month ago, and I haven't had a tobacco cigarette since.

hey sibby
I'm rather new to this myself but I can tell you what I have learned. I would not recommend the Blu brand, esp not with the prefilled cartridges they send free. I wanted one that looked like a real cigarette, to help me quit smoking "analogs". But, after being so dissatisfied with the Blu, I got the RIVA and some juice and it is MUCH better. It does not look like a real cig, but does produce a lot of vapor. I would also suggest looking at the 6-part series in the library section on this site. I found it very helpful. Also, try different flavors of juice. I never thought I'd like anything but menthol because I smoked Salem's (for 28 years!!), but I am surprised that I like some of the flavors. I've not had an analog in 8 days (with the help of Chantix and vaping). Good luck and keep browsing this site. It has really helped me.

Sibby,

read everything you can here on these fourms.

when I started researching e cigs to find out if they would be right for me, every single google search always led me back to here. Any other route always seemed to be a dead end.

Especially look at glossaries of terms. the abbreviations and the alphabet soup of PG, VG, etc can be daunting at first, but with just a little patience it shouldn't take you more than a few days to learn the majority of the jargon.

After that, look for money back guarantees before you purchase. keep in mind Blu just changed their policy so you won't be able to get a "full" refund if you decide to send those back.

My personal experience thus far has been with Blu, a KR808D and I ordered a 510 yesterday ( should get it later in the week )

I am a big fan of the kr808d as I think it was great for me as a newbie to get started on. Its fully auto and cartomizers make the experience easy to get used to quickly. You will have to learn to vaoe though. Its not exactly like a cigareete. Its more like smoking a pipe. Keep this in mind: puff, puff, draw 3-8 seconds. I get a good "hit" and decent vapor.

and RADICALJD! where was that code YESTERDAY?!?!?! lol I ordered the ultimate 510 kit from nictine nirvana yesterday looked for a code but couldnt find one hehehe

and thanks for the report on their shipping. This is my first purchase through them and I was curious about it. Got an email today saying my order has been shipped. pretty good turnaround.

Cliff, the owner of Nicotine Nirvana, is a great guy. If you have any problem, he will bend over backwards to make it right... though I have not had any problems with any of my NN purchases.

+1 for the suggestion of an eGo. I smoked about the same amount as yourself and know that I would never have been able to make switch on a reg 510 or KR808. Having to switch out batteries every little bit would have driven me right back to analogs!

The eGo should last you roughly 8-10 hours per battery. That's enough to make it through a work day without worry. Shop around as prices / warranty vary. Also, make sure you purchase extra atomizers and juice. I started with 18mg, but had to switch to 24mg to keep the demons at bay. Get some at both strengths to see what works for you. Flavors can be fun too!

Do start in the ECF library and read The Wonderful World of Vaping. It will answer a lot of your questions.
The ECF Library - E-Cigarette Forum

The basics:
Stock batteries require very little initial investment but if you find vaping is for you, you will quickly tire of having to charge and change your batteries every 1-2 hours.

The eGo (which works with 510 cartridges and cartomizers) will last longer and cost a bit more. For an even larger investment, you can get a mod with a long-lived battery. I don't think anyone can drain an 18650 in day.
e-Cig Mod Battery Chart | e-Cigarette Battery Comparison

Cartridges - The filler isn't perfect. Be prepared to play with straws, Fluval, etc. But cartridges go with atomizers which easily last a few months (unless you buy a dud.)

Cartomizers - Combination cartridge & atomizer. Much cheaper than atomizers but also more disposable.

Whatever connection your battery has (510, KR808, 801, 901, M4...), you won't be making a lifelong commitment. Adapters are available which will let you try other atomizers or cartos. So don't worry about making a few mistakes along the way. Most of my "rejects" are tucked away for emergencies.

After 7 months (tomorrow), I've settled on a Little Chuck with soft tipped 510 cartomizers from Clouds of Vapor (I think they have the best price) and a drip tip (COV carries the ones I mostly use but Nhaler has the most beautiful selection.) For liquid I vape Tasty Vapor almost exclusively.

I hope that helps. Good luck on your vaping journey. You're gonna love it.

Welcome Sibby :)
Its very confusing isn't it? lol I still remember my own first post back in december - I had pretty much the same advice as above except they didnt have many eGos around back then so the main choice was between the regular 510 and the KR808. These are still the most popular choices today. At the time I think I was told V4L was a good place to get the KR8.
I settled finally on the 510 - I think I liked the idea of it better after reading and re-reading all the reviews and the ECF Library - obviously thats a personal choice thing so you will make up your mind depending on your OWN research :)
If you do go the 510 route though Id definitely agree that an eGo will give you a better battery life than the regular 510.
I thought though Id show you what newby-me bought though and while I still say an eGo battery is better this little kit is still lasting me well (I have an eGo now as well though). I bought all my stuff at cignot.com who are a wonderful company (recommended by several members here in that first post I made) with the best customer service. I still use them.
Joye 510 NO BOX (I later went back and bought another of these as it worked out cheaper than buying spares lol)
Joye Passthru (I find this still to be a wonderful battery-saving thing while I'm at home and I use to this day on a daily basis)
I'm not saying you should buy what I did but I thought it might help if you saw what I started out with - that was 7 months ago now and Ive been a vaper since the first week I got it all. Oh and I still use all the kit I got then although most of the atties have now gone to atty heaven lol They are pretty disposable so keep a lot of them around. Lots of supplers will sell them too so they are easy to get hold of.

Good luck - I hope you find something that suits YOU perfectly and welcome to ECF.

I agree about the ECF Library. I am a new member here, but have been lurking here for close to 10 months. There is a ton of information in the Library, more in one place than you will find anywhere else on the internet. I would suggest that you read it a little at a time, though, so you don't get information overload. It can be very overwhelming to digest all in one sitting. The thorough and in-depth manner in which it is written is the ultimate in providing a beginner e-cig user a good foundation for making sensible buying and using decisions. After 7 months of vaping, I still go back to the library to refresh my memory, or to flesh out decisions before making a new purchase.

I probably spent a few weeks reading up here at the forum before I went with a Joye 510 Manual battery from Rocky Mountain Vapor (fast shipping & nice responses to my stupid questions). I didn't know if Hubby or myself would like it and didn't want to invest too much in case we didn't. Well we love it and have totally quit smoking!!!

Since it works for us my only complaint is the battery life is short. I could def. see upgrading to the Joye EGO...

As for the endless pages of flavors we started with a Winston and Ry4 but quickly decided to get away from anything tobacco flavored. It helped us crave cigs less.

So far we have tried flavors from Nhaler, Ms. T's Bakery, DIY Flavor Shack, and Tasty Vapor all were great experiences and I will happily give them our business again and again!!!

Decide how much you want to invest. Have fun with the flavors. Hope you enjoy as much as we do!!!

You will find all 6 parts to the introduction to vaping at the above link. Please take your time and read through all 6 parts.
When you are through come back and ask some questions. Your first e-cig is an important purchase.

What she, and a few others said, go to the library.
And Welcome!!!

I also use the KR808D-1 -- vapor4life's version is called the VaporKing. NHaler is another good choice for KR808D-1 kits. Coupons are smilin and saveinnj, respectively.

If you're away from power during the day, get a kit with a PCC -- it's a little case that has a battery, can recharge the KR batteries about 4X before it needs to be recharged itself.

V4L also sells an XL battery, lasts a good bit longer than the standard one.

Prefilled cartomizers (cartos) make for a really simple use. Filling/refilling them yourself is also pretty trivial, using what's called the condom method.

Be ready to bump up (or down) a level in nicotine (expressed as mg, or mg/ml). I smoked Marlboro reds, pack a day (PAD), expected the 16 - 18 mg strength would be right. I didn't stop smoking regular cigarettes (analogs) until I picked up some 24 mg juice (the flavoring plus nicotine liquid). Many others had to bump up a level, though some had to drop down one -- people react differently.

Long, slow, drags -- 5 sec or so inhale -- not short puffs.

You'll need to drink extra water. e-cigs dry you out a bit.

Good luck!

As you may have read some people have issues with Vegetable Glycerin (VG) or Propylene Glycol (PG), I would suggest getting a small bottle of low nicotine VG based and one that is PG based, if you have any issues you can see if you need to eliminate one or the other and you don't have any down time waiting for shipping.
I found PG dries my throat and I have a better experience with VG, I prefer the extra vapor rather over the throat hit (TH).
