Improve performance

One thing I have noticed.
Take the batteries out, use some sandpaper on the tops of each battery.
Reinstall, and you'll get better performance.

Interesting - removing trace oxidation would improve connectivity. But by removing any plating on the terminal end you might encourage greater oxidation.

I've done that to the battery connectors, but not the batts themselves.... and something else that works to clean off even corrosion, and is less abrasive than sandpaper, is an ink eraser!!
The ones on the ends of those pens that look like pencils are good for getting into small places, too...

The eraser idea is a good idea, I would go with that, I have always used the eraser to clean contacts.

Even pink erasers work fine, there have been many times where fixing a computer for someone, erasering the contacts on a card will bring it back to ship shape.
