Very sensible policy. I don't allow vaping in my classes because it is disruptive. I figure that if I can wait for a break so can my students. Although, I did just have a class were everyone got to vape. We were talking about nicotine addiction and I had all the vapers bring their gear, I brought mine and a bunch of drip tip covers and the class vaped away.

Unbelievable! I'm calling the emergency services: Outbreak of Rationality in Maryland! Quick, seal off the area before it spreads! OhMyGod, there are people trapped inside the cordon! 8-o

Devolving authority down to someone actually present is so rare that I love it when I see it. The university seems to be trusting professors to take the decision that works for them, and staying in the background to back them up.

It's amazing how well this kind of thing works. Someone right there in front of you, in a position of authority, makes a decision, and while you're in their space you have to obey. (You might call them an a*****e under your breath, or afterwards, but while you're there, you have to deal with it). Contrast this with what's all too common: someone comes up to you and tells you to do something, because "it's company/university POLICY". They are acting as a mindless automaton. You are asked to behave as a mindless automaton. You end up feeling like smashing things up. Or, even worse, something that's all too common on public transport here in the UK: they don't even pretend they need a human being there to recite their "policy" - you get a pre-recorded announcement (generally done by a woman with a "soothing" voice that makes you feel like ripping your own ears off).

Congratulations to Frostburg State Univ!

When I was in school, they provided ashtrays (well, these little silver things) so you could smoke. Disruption was never a concern although the fumes may have bothered a few people, but no one mentioned it. Of course, the dinosaurs roamed the earth back then too.

Ha, times have changed. Now if you don't keep a handle on it the whole class will be testing, vaping, surfing the net, having sex in the back, or who knows what.
