Dr. Polosa, Italian vapor and tobacco expert, reviews e-cigs in BMC Medicine

The newest edition of BMC Medicine includes a thorough review by Dr. Riccardo Polosa of the University of Catania, Italy, of numerous studies (including 9 in which he was an author) of respiratory function among users of e-cigarettes. In a group of “healthy” smokers, lung function improved on spirometric testing at 3, 6, and 12 months after switching from smoking tobacco cigarettes to “vaping.” Among people with asthma and/or COPD (chronic obstructive lung disease, bronchitis and emphysema), improvement in symptoms was noted in two-thirds of smokers who switched to vaping. According to Dr. Polosa, taken together, these findings provide emerging evidence that e-cig/vapor product use can reverse harm from tobacco smoking.

Dr. Polosa’s conclusions are these, where EC represents E-cigarettes and vapor products: “Compared to combustible cigarettes, e-vapor products are at least 96% less harmful and may substantially reduce individual risk and population harm. Future research will better define and further reduce residual risks from EC use to as low as possible by establishing appropriate quality control and standards. Although large longitudinal studies are warranted to elucidate whether ECs are a less harmful alternative to tobacco cigarettes and whether significant health benefits can be expected in smokers who switch from tobacco to ECs, the emerging evidence that EC use can reverse harm from tobacco smoking should be taken into consideration by regulatory authorities seeking to adopt proportional measures for the e-vapor category.”

ACSH’s Dr. Gil Ross added, “One by one, the myths being foisted upon smokers by corrupt and/or ideological opponents of e-cigs are being toppled. Others include the baseless charge that nicotine liquid is poisoning children, and that flavored e-liquids are seducing youth into vaping, nicotine addiction, and smoking — whereas the data clearly show these statements are lies. One day, those who have propagated the falsehoods that are keeping smokers smoking will be held to account, I hope.”

but good news like this deserves all the exposure it can get

Totally agree, the more we can get this info plastered on the net, the better off we all are. Its going to take significantly more, the more the merrier.

For the life of me, haven't been able to figure out why more doctors-scientists are not studying the daylights out of the advantages of vaping vs smoking. AND PUBLISHING PROVEN RESULTS......:(

I have noticed within the last month, Fox news has mentioned vaping with no detrimental poor or flat-out wrong reporting....unlike some other news networks. Don't watch much news, but only a few days ago, they were giving it fair reporting, talking about vaping is allowing smokers to quit the cigs.

If I'm not mistaken, one of the anchors vapes too.

It's funny how the public believes all this crap out there. Before I started vaping I did my homework and knew how much healthier it was. I still get plenty of looks by people who look at me funny and I all I do is laugh.

We need more reports like this to hit the mainstream media but they never do because they want us to smoke.

The hell with them, I will never smoke another cigarette in my life. I play hockey in a beer league and I feel like I gained 10 years on my life in 5+ months.

Will be a day of celebration when the first of them go to jail. These are crimes against humanity they are perpetrating and punishment should be appropriate.

I am under no delusions that it will actually come to be but I do have hope that when the house of cards they have built from the lies begins to really tumble at least a few will get tossed under the bus by the other scum trying to distance themselves.

I am living proof. My lung function improved to the point that I didn't need oxygen when I did a 6 minute walk and I don't need my rescue inhalers. My COPD is here for the rest of my life but I sure am enjoying that life much more now.

+1. Fortunally i never get into COPD, but was already on route, with spirometer tests getting bad. I was 2 1/2 pack day, and never managed to quit with anything. I was a completely anxious smoker, compulsive. Now vaping, i can stay several hours without vaping without even thinking about it, something i could never archive on smoking. My lungs had pain every day and bad cough. Now im clear, i can do apnea on water again.

Here in Brazil vaping is forbiden, but as long as the government is so corrupt its also a blessing, because i can vape and purchase without issues.

Why? I have noticed that doctors who were mostly liberals in the past have become more right leaning in recent decades. Strange that since much of their incomes come from govt paid for health care.

Oh I know some will be discredited, but I don't understand why more reputable scientists are not doing controlled studies, to rebuke the junk-science.

A big part of any scientist's reputation, at least in the US, depends on how strongly they support the government's thinking.
Coloring outside the lines means no funding. No funding means no work, and no reputation. Independent thought is not part of the system currently in place.

Yep you are either with us or against us mentality. Why can't we just be for ourselves? I follow no pack.

Not really. They're doing nothing more than running a mandatory insurance scheme.

Socialist would mean them running the whole healthcare as a non-profit at-cost system.

Hence, it's a fascist system - control (mandatory) without owning. But since owning means having control over the use - it's just as much socialistic in behavior.

P.S. ok just visited. Aaah Ayn Rand.... isn't it funny that in some respects she actually agrees with Upton Sinclair :p or the other way round :p

P.P.S. Kent, can you visualize this... In the search of the perfect system... Ayn Rand heading right... Upton Sinclair heading left.... except they're on a sphere.....
