Hi,
I recently purchased a Provari v2.5 and a Kanger aerotank. I've been vaping for about a month now. When I initially fired it up, it seemed to be working fine. the aerotank coils were reading 2.0 - 2.1 ohms. After that coil burnt out, i swapped it with another and have noticed that the coils were suddenly reading higher than previous. I've tested and swapped out 5 coils and the last 3 had jumped from 2.0 ohms to 2.6-2.9. A couple of them have jumped that high in a day or two. Is this normal? If not, would the issue be in the atomizer/tank or the provari?

thanks a bunch for any info that could be shared.

The issue would be with the atomizers.

If the provari was at fault, it would consistently read wrong, so the readings wouldn't jump. The tank itself will never be at fault, as it has nothing to do with the resistance measurements, it is just a receptacle for juice.

This leaves us with the atomizers. Unfortunately, most stores do not purchase genuine kanger coils. They get the cheapest ones that they can find. So what ends up happening is that the coils are made with very low quality wire, specifically they tend to be made with 32 awg kanthal D.

Over time all wires will jump in resistance, this is for a variety of reasons. The wires corrode over time, leaving them thinner than they started, which increases resistance. They will also develop pits, which again restricts the flow of current. Also an oxidation layer will result in a thinner conductive cross section. Kanthal A-1 will do this much slower than Kanthal D. And the thinner the wire is, the quicker it will happen. So when you pair thin 32 awg wire with low quality materials, you end up having coils that will jump in resistance very quickly.

The only suggestion I can really give you, besides rebuilding the coils yourself with good quality materials, is to look for a supplier that stocks genuine coils.

The only supplier that I know carries genuine coils is vapehappy:

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info guys. It's very much appreciated. I have been cleaning my Provari (without alcohol, as provape.com suggests) on a weekly basis. Since the aerotank has the air intake on the sides, there's no gunk build up on the 510. I can only assume that the coils I bought were crap. It never occured to me that there might be fakes on a product that costs a couple bucks. It makes sense considering that the original coil that came with the tank worked fine for a couple of weeks, and the replacements are the ones I'm having issues with. Anyhow, thanks a lot for the info guys. I'm amazed at how much I need to know and all the info required for something as seemingly simple as vaping. :)

He cant post on the provari forum as he only has a post count of 1.

I have personally had my provari for about 3 months now and have never needed to clean it. That said, I exclusively use protanks with hand built coils, which never, ever leak.

I was thinking about the type of clearos that some inexperienced people open the wrong way and douse their entire PV with.

    You might be above average:)

Even original aero tank coils have several known issues. The coils tend to shift when tightened down, especially when tightened all the way down on a provari. Had same issue on my Provari and aerotank combo. Stock kanger dual coils tend to gunk up quickly which can raise the resistance value as well. Eventually I just rebuilt the stock dual coil heads with single micro coils.

A contributing factor could be over tightening the atomizer onto the mod. This can bend the coil wires and causing shorts or hot spots and effecting ohm variance.

On a re-buildable atomizer, varying ohms is an indicator that you coil mount screws are not tight enough or are grounding out some where.

If you really want to max out the capabilities of the Provari, look into getting a good rba like the Russian, flash-e-vapor V2, kayfun or Tailfun's. If not ready for re-buildable atomizers yet then a good changeable coil atty like the Aspire Nautilus or a carto tank like ibtank would be a good option to look into.

Welcome and congrats on your vape. The P will get you there now it's time to focus on what your juice is cooking in.

    Vape long and Prosper.
