Under $100!?! Yeah, I'll be buying one.

re: other colors: you could always figure out what MOQ would be at a certain price point and then poll people to see who will buy which color... limited edition runs, as it were. I'm sure gunmetal would be a recurring seller but maybe only 30 people will ever want an orange one or whatever.

...great news, Paul. Is any development being done are present on the variable module? $150 might be an attractive target for the unit with variable components.

...black, of course. Perhaps silicone sleeves...

Nope. I haven't done much development work on the variable module lately. I was going to announce this when I post the video of the mod, but since you brought it up... there probably won't be a variable module for this first mod. In April, I talked with a professor about the variable module and after doing some basic calculations, it was decided that the module would be way too big for the efficiency and and power required. Most vapers need at least 30W or 40W, and there is a reason why most modules are the market come up short. You need a lot of space for that.

In order to make the module fit, the mod would have to be significantly bigger or fatter, which would make it less aesthetically pleasing and more unwieldy to hold. There is only so many space in the mod and all of it is being used right now. The door halves are held together by a big magnet that takes up the space between the battery and the bottle. Any left over space are used by the "ribs" I added to boost rigidity and strength of the casing. Even without the module there are times when I wished I had more space to work with.

It might be possible to make a variable voltage mod in the future that uses two 18350 batteries.

So no, there probably won't be a variable module for this mod. But I compensate by offering it at a low price and making the door easy to take off and put on (so swapping batteries would be breeze). Plus you get the simplicity and reliability.

Not fussed at all about a module. Hope the prototypes go well for you

It is difficult to appreciate this thread, as there are no pictures (other than the blurry cameraphone pic).
Is this a regional problem? - I'm in Ireland.

No, it's not regional.

Paul has been working out the kinks and has said he will be alleviating the pic drought here pretty soon. Just hang in there a little bit longer and your patience will be rewarded :)Q

But there's possibly going to be full regulated mod in the future. Correct?

I have always wanted to make a regulated mod. That's why I initially planned on it. However, it's no secret that I was overly ambitious when I started this thread last year. Right now, my goal is to design and make something simple first. Once this initial mod is out, then I'm all open to creative ideas for future products. I'm all for fun and distinctive stuff, and I enjoy tinkering.

The proper way to do this is to design the module first, taken into account of the wattage, efficiency, whether it's step down or step up (which will dictate what kind and how many batteries are used), and then design the mod around the module. The module will need to be highly efficient to prevent overheating. Much easier to design a mod from scratch based on the module, then to work with a fixed constraint. I guess I did do some basic calculations when I envisioned the mod last year, but I was comparing it with the Kick at the time, which is way too weak after talking to some vapers here. I also changed the mod mechanically to take care of some other problems, which further used up space in the mod. In order to make the mod accept a regulated module that can handle 30W or 40W, the mod would have to be quite large. People who are not interested in the module would not be happy with that.

So yes, there is the possibility of a full regulated mod in the future, but I will have to design the module itself first and then design the mod around it.

There used to be some pics in the first page, but it no longer shows. I have no idea why, nor do I care, because the revised design is quite different and I will post new pics soon.

Paul, I'm wondering if you are still planning on using a fuse in your mod. I don't use any kind of fuse in any of my mechanical mods. I am just careful with my builds. Heck, if I knock over a mod, I'll remove the atty and check it on my ohm meter just to make sure it's alright. I just remember from a ways back talking about a 10amp fuse. I'd just soon not have one.

You could always just jump it. I'm hoping for the fuse because I'm not particularly nice to my gear at work and a fuse would add peace of mind.

Or use a bigger fuse, I guess. I'm not easy on my mods either, but careful. I carry 4 mods with me to work everyday and if I end up dropping one or knocking it over hard, I won't use that one until I go home for lunch and check it. I know that he had pictured a 10 amp auto fuse, but I vape everything at nearly twice that, so unless there is some hardware factor that it's necessary to limit it to 10 amps, I guess I could just replace it with a 20 amp. I could still vape the way I like, but have some level of protection there. I say I don't have protection in my mechanicals, but really I do. I have 4 Reos that have a spring that will collapse and 4 Pekos with leaf springs that are supposed to drop, all in the event of a dead short, and may also drop if the ohms drop too low.

If I recall correctly this was to be an automotive type 10 amp fuse. you could always substitute a higher amp and still have some protection from dead shorts. Another maker also uses a similar fuse but offers a jumper that he calls the blowyourfaceoffstrip.

addit: Seems we were typing at the same time Paul.

Looking forward to this Paul and appreciate you keeping it budget friendly. For your future projects down the road, might I suggest offering a dual battery model? Seems with the small form factor, adding a dual 18650 model might still be relatively small and fit the hand nicely.
