I just had a great idea!
For those with a volt meter that threads into the 510 connector-
It would be relatively easy to make a 510 connector with leads coming off of it that you can screw your device onto and use as a way to test batteries outside of the Reo.
I'll try to research what it would take.

EDIT: Well, what do you know- one click to a site that I thought might carry the pars for this, and I found this:
Prewired 510 Battery Connector, Sealed
So for $3.00 you can convert your 510 connector volt meter basically a regular one that is very simple but might be somewhat fragile. But... some type of simple modifications can be done for close to nothing or with a little money and time, it could be made even nicer.

When I think about this and if I decide to tackle it, I incision adding an easy way to grip without its use being awkward. Ideally the grip at the connector itself, so that wires can be concealed from their bare solder joints. Someone in the comments section at Mdvapes, it was mentioned that shooting the wire side of the connector full of hot glue kept everything safe inside and added some stability. I would also add wire leads with either points on the end or attached to a case of some sort that you just slip batteries into to read their voltage. ideally, what would be great would be some type of tapering aluminum pieces that allows you to just slide any battery into it and it will make contact with the positive and negative ends. If that's not possible, then something spring loaded, like the older chargers shown above this post.

Following the above post, this is what I envision:
DIY Volt tester.jpg
This is certainly not a finished item.
I did pull the spring out... it is way to stiff...I want something that slides in real easy but still works.
Good thing about this mod is that you can still test the battery under the atty's load...this can to some degree diagnose a potentially bad atty too although it won't read out ohms.

Okay, here's the latest...
I've decided to not use the screw in type tester for other things- although that would be pretty cool. Making a new tester is very cheap and can be done easily...and this way, I can have both!!

I bought 2 of the little digital displays that Sterno posted about at the top of this thread: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-1...&ps=63&clkid=126840484561731134#ht_1048wt_698
I have the following at my house already (so I was able to compare the sizes between the two): Universal Battery Tester Checker AA AAA C D 9V button USA Seller | eBay

The little battery tester above for regular batteries opens up wide enough to accommodate an 18650 and all sizes under that. The little meter display area on it is also large enough to break out and put the digital display in it's place... So, I'm going to take this little tester apart (they are cheap enough)- rip the guts out (I don't want to be testing 1.5V batteries) and put the digital piece in there instead and wire everything up internally... And this costs me less than $15 for two- about $7.50 each, including shipping. When I get the product done, I'll post up a picture. This should be very easy to do and the finished unit will be small and very handy...Just stretch the little arm out and you can test all batteries you have for vaping!!

If this works out, I think everyone will want one and I'll do a write-up on how to make your own.

I love it! It's really interesting to see the start of an idea, then see it evolve thru all the changes and improvements. Looking forward to seeing your finished unit Tenn.
Thanks buddy- even with shipping charges, this can be made for pretty cheap...Once I get one made, I'll post it up...if quantities are bought form China, these could be put together for only a few bucks each! I'd say everyone will want one.

Here is what I envision the finished product to look like (this prototype is photoshopped with both parts put together), with an 18650 battery:

I've been searching for something like this. Sweet.
Yes, I have too and you know what? There are none- at least that are any good...this will fit in the palm of your hand and will work with any battery!! I hope to have parts here in a couple of days and have my first one made by the end of the week. My son has taken an interest and may build these for me- for others, if interested. However, we should wait to see how they actually turn out before counting our chickens.

If you list the mods, we can (hopefully) tell you whether or not you can use that particular voltage meter.

I received mine yesterday, I can tell you that they work with a Reo, LavaTube, Provari, Fistpack,VVpV, Buzz Pro, Infinity Pro and the Silver Bullet.
Does not work with my 650 MAh Ego battery.

I got the two digital read-outs today in the mail... since I already had one of the 1.5V battery testers (like my picture shows), I gutted it and made up my first one. It was really easy how it went but I was reminded at how sucky my soldering skills were/are. What you need to get this done are: nippers, one piece of flexible wire, some solder and soldering gun and a hot glue gun. The finished product looks like that picture I posted above. When I get the actual 1.5V testers (I ordered 2), I'll take pictures and do a write-up. I knew that with today's prototype I would be trying different thing until I got things right so I didn't want to go overboard in taking lots of pictures.

Here's mine :)

Picked up a $2 project box at RS and used an old atty for the bottom connector and a 510 connector on top.
Total cost around $5.00
Looks good!! I have a new idea now- my tester with also a 510 connector on it so I can read batteries inside and outside of mods!!

Okay- trouble is that those connectors aren't cheap...about $2.50 each (boosting the price of what I had from $4 to $9 and that doesn't include the 510 sleeve if you want to use it on the Reo... Does someone know where to get these parts cheaper? I do prefer the prewired ones as they are hard as hell to solder....Let me know if you have a good source.

So, this is exactly what I ended up with today (this picture is with an 18650 battery- will work with it and anything smaller)...nothing more, nothing less:

Dave, your next assignment, should you choose to accept it... :) How bout a carto or atty ohm checker based on the design of your batt meter. I see a flat pin on one end, to rest the mouth end of the carto on, and a tapered pin that goes in the center pin of the connector end. Meter needs a power source of course.
I buy 15-50 cartos at a time, and it's a pain for me to sit here and check them using the DMM and handeling the leads.
Whaddya think?

Man, that sounds good- wish I could integrate them... Hmmm...
Checked with Chinese resellers- unless I get up into the hundreds of these items, I cannot save due to shipping costs from China- not willing to take that much of a risk.

Oh, the patent...Hmmm, I'm not sure how that will play out
CAN SOMEONE TELL ME??

I'm already tearing apart a patented battery checker and inserting yet another patented item instead of the 1.5V analog meter....LOL. I'm thinking I'm good in terms of getting in trouble with either company- bought their product out-right....but there are lingering questions. Patents are expensive by the way and I have no intention or really going full-force with this. Would build some for friends here and there...I just figured total cost with shipping for parts is just under $5...then there's the labor...and shipping out to folks- so it adds up but still a great product. I plan on making several more of these and see what happens! Oh, and I don't intend on selling these on the ECF...If I change my mind and decide too though, I will need to figure out how and follow the rules here.

So, what I thought were the same little 1.5V testers came today (2 of them)...I thought I would be snazzy and ordered blue ones off of ebay. Although they look the same in the pictures, the construction was considerably different. For starters, this thing is welded together it seems- it would not come apart easily at all. In fact, I cracked the case all around and had to super glue it back to get it back together- doesn't look good. Once inside the construction had been upgraded- much easier to solder the chip in place. However, it doesn't fit into the little clear panel (window) at all and I had to super glue the edges to get it to stay (and it's tilted :(). Anyway, it still works...just more of a hassle and doesn't fit with the LED panel as well. So, lesson learned- buy the black more square ones. Here's a picture of the Blue- without blowing it up you might not even realize it looks pretty banged up from the project. Still works so I'll keep this one and buy more black ones for this to continue!! Oh, and I need to order some more of the digital read-outs (what I called a chip above):
