Is an penstyle better and if so, why?

Okay, here's the scenario: I have three models of e-cig that I use at different times because they all have their pros and cons -

1) DES901 - aka mini - at home most of the time, with USB passthrough
2) RN4081 - aka super-mini - at home occasionally
3) M401/2 - aka EVO - outside / at work

Other than pipes and cigars (except disposables which I do have), the one style that I don't posses is the original classic 801 aka penstyle.

What I like about the 901 is the light draw, easy topping up and the flat mouthpiece. What I dislike is the poor battery (obviously!), sticking switches, and the need to top up frequently, e.g., every 15-20 puffs or so.

Is the 801 any better for these 901 limitations? I can see that the 801 has a bigger atomiser and a much bigger cart but does it actually make much difference in practice? For example, my EVO has a much smaller cart than the 901 but it uses it much more efficiently so it needs topping up less even though it's smaller. I see that I can get an 801 with a manual switch and this is very tempting because I'm fed up fighting with the automatic switches.

In the beginning, I thought I wanted an e-cig to be physically similar to a real cigarette but as time has gone one, I now realise that there are more important considerations so I'm wondering if the 801 might not be a bad purchase (investment?!) after all.

Any advice appreciated.

I have been a big fan of the 801 penstyle for a while now. A Puresmoker penstyle with the USB is hard to beat vapor wise. I recently bought a 901 with a USB to try, mainly because Puresmoker is out of 801 atomizers at times and now I have a choice.

801 with USB. Great vapor, fairly hard draw, less need to top off. How the cart fiber is packed makes a difference. Some carts I can get 5 or 6 drops of liquid before it is topped off, others only 3.

901 with USB. Great vapor like my 801, seems like the vapor has smaller particles and is more like real smoke. A bit lighter draw. Only holds 3 drops when topping off. Harder to top off as the cart fits tightly in the atomizer. It took a few hours to get my 901 broke in. Didn't like it at all at first because of poor vapor production.

Personally I like both but am using my 901. It smokes and feels more like a real cigarette. If you are not using a USB, the 801 is better for the extra battery life.

Brian, a couple of questions: How would you compare the throat hit between the two? Is the vapor different between the two if you don't use the usb? Do you drip on both atomizers? Thanks

I only had the penstyle for a day before I broke it (I have not figured out why yet.. but it may have been my fault) and I have to say my initial impression.. if you go that way.. it is hard to step back. The throat hit when dripping was so intense.. it seems if you LIKE throat hit.. it would be hard to go back down to a smaller and lighter device. Definitely cool device.. just maybe not the right one for me.

Edit: After using it a little longer (I just got the one battery I have left charged up) I would like to say I must agree with justjulie... it is not throat hit that is higher, it is just the sore throat I have AFTER I use it.. not WHILE I am taking the puff... that I am feeling.

I hate to say a particular model is "better" because, of course, it all depends on what you want.

I do like the pen style. I have a KissBox as well as a PureSmoker 801, and I enjoy them both.

Spikey isn't the only one to comment that they feel the throat hit is stronger with the pen style, but personally, I haven't really found that. Honestly, I think the 901 packs a more powerful punch for me because it has a harsher feel to it--maybe that's at least in part because the vapor feels warmer in the 901 than in the pen style. When I first got off analogs, I craved a harsher hit, and the 901 delivered that better than the pen style for me.

Having said that, I've really come to appreciate the pen style. The vapor seems cooler than the 901, and I wonder whether the longer barrel of the pen style allows the vapor to cool a bit more before reaching the mouthpiece. I also feel that I taste the e-liquid more fully with the pen style--the vape has a smoother feel and more complex taste than the 901, at least that's been my experience.

But, clearly, experiences differ.

Just so we don't get mixed up..
Puresmoker sells penstyle RN4072 (like NJoy) while DSE801 are Kissbox, David Yang etc..- 2 different animals..although compatible with each other for mix & match..
In my own experience there is a difference - RN4072 atomizer has a deeper flavor while DSE801 have more vapor, tends to burn liquid faster but they have lasted longer

I just started to vape about 1 week ago. Last week I got a DSE 103 from cigtechs and I loved it but I wanted a bigger one also for work and home... So yesterday I got a DSE 801 from cigtechs and I love it even more. Im using my 103 for friends now and Im smoking the 801 almost exclusively. Its like its glued to my lips.

With the pen style 801 I find that I get a much easier draw and more vapor and its just smoother. I can taste my juice better also. I like the size for holding also. My only con I would say about the penstyle I have is that its slightly harder to see the LED then it is on my 103 super mini. Though I have found that if I hold it a certain way I can see it on my hand.

But I am absolutely addicted now to vapping :)

Kitabz, There is no end. but there was no end to buying tobacco cigs either.

Oh...it's only the beginning! :D

Yup, I used to think nothing of spending ~£30 (=~$45) every FOUR days when I was smoking so it will eventually even out (I hope). I have enough hardware and juice now to start my own business!

Misty, I have a 901 (just a week, now) and I'm ordering a penstyle from puresmoker or e-smokey. I want more throat hit (warmer vapor). I've also ordered a pass through for the penstyle and plan on getting a battery pack. I don't really understand the distinction you are making between the 801 and the 4072. Knowing I prefer more "hit", more similar to a real cigarette, is one better than the other? Thanks

Hi Win!
The RN4072 would be the choice if you prefer that warmer full flavor.

The 2 styles are made by different factories - you'll find posts that prefer one over the other.
I had had a real bad batch of RN4072 on one order so decided to try the DSE801 and found it had a lighter easier draw , lots of vapor too but seems to vape "colder" - meaning the atomizer doesn't get so hot so quickly and my atomizer lasted longer..which was a priority at the time.

Enjoy your new pen!
