is battery protection only needed for rechargables?

As said, nope.

Protection is a safe practice for rechargeable batteries. They prevent over discharge (if this happens, no chance of recharging...through safe measures) and overcharge(charging beyond the capacity of the battery risks fire/explosion)

Non-rechargeables have no need for it.

But, whether protected or unprotected, all batteries pose risks, but reduced when they are protected or non-rechargeable.

Vent holes? I'm assuming you mean on the positive side of the battery with 1 hole on each side of the raised contact? Not sure what you mean by "vent holes in case that holds the battery."

If so, they are there for just that reason. To expel heat, since lithium's do get warm/hot upon usage. If anything, be glad there are holes to vent. Firecrackers are what they are because it's tightly wrapped and energy has to make a way out. Break a fire cracker in half and light it, it's a short lived sparkler.

i ment should i drill a hole in the chasis of the flashlight i am moding so if a bat does vent the toxic gas can escape from the unit instead of building up pressure inside...
but i guess its best to do it just from yer firecracker comment
and thanks fer the help!
Oh, okay. Yeah, I don't see why that would hurt. To be honest, if for some reason, the battery expels gas, you'll definitely know before this happens because there will be extreme heat emitting from the battery.

Also, not so sure how effective it would be drilling a small hole for the purpose of the mentioned. Unless your mod is rock solidly made, force will travel through less resistance and it would still be the area where your connector was fashioned into. So, even if you drilled a small hole, the diameter of a small hole, say the size of the hole in your atty. This wouldn't be sufficient for built up pressure to travel out of, IF this was occurring rapidly.

I just don't see this happening anyway, vent or no vent. My flashlight mod, one in particular is completely water proof. No vent, no hole, no nothing. The battery is not engaged long enough for any built up heat to occur. We momentarily consume energy in the vaping realm.

But, if you have a short, you'll have a problem. Make sure you protect all wires and solder joints.

Anyway, still better safe than sorry I supose.
