No, it isn't. Social media is like... the devil.

Also, started with interactions on the internet in college where like, it was all alt. DOT.

I used to hang out on alt.angst under my real name and we had meetups all the time and stuff.

People got all EXCITED when you could program yourself into a CHAT room and make your own "Area" and vanish and stuff. lt was all very very limited code.

This is like the descendent of that and while I doubt anyone is going to visit me in Douglas and whatnot, well, I'm sorry there is a level of privacy you may not get on FB. Probably not, but kinda. The illusion anyway.

I found out (much later to my horror) that NOTHING on the internet like, goes away. While my posts on alt.angst were in some ways some of my proudest writings, well, I discovered to my horror for a while under my maiden NAME, they were like "RESULT 1" for the longest time.

Don't get me wrong, this was pre bipolar it was some EXCELLENT stuff, but a post musing about drunk driving both hungry and miserable but watching the sub guy make it with INTENSE care that was like, it made me wonder if the guy was TAUGHT that way, or if he just LOVED to make subs and stuff, and this was his métier so to speak, and then I wondered aloud about MY métier (which upon reading many years later I decided was probably "drunk driving, but mysteriously never causing a death) well a post with all THAT that ends with, "Welcome to my sandwich."

That's not really what you want your employer to see. Really. As the first "you." Not to mention the squirrel incident.

I was super happy when I changed my name after I got married the second time. I believe Oliver owns all our information and won't give it up unless forced by the (English) government if I understand fora correctly. If it was a US site, I could see us being subpoenaed as a group (I mean they have all the INFO already but they do have to pretend to get it legally) and so as far as I know like, my identity here is safe. At least, from employers anyway.

Not that I much care, I mean I am employed and doing okay as far as I KNOW. But, well, we shall see.

Social media is the devil though and ECF is not.

Although I believe it's technically against their rules, it's certainly possible to create a FB or Twit account using a fake name and achieve a modicum of privacy that way. Pro-Tip: Use a different browser for this than for your regular internet use; otherwise both will track you everywhere.

Funny you should mention that. My daughter had a FB account since she was roughly 11 (also against the rules, but she had my wife's consent, and my wife had her login and would check her feed on a regular basis when she was younger). Well, this summer, before her senior year in college, she deleted it for that exact reason -- she didn't need/want prospective employers seeing her entire teen history (not that it was sordid in any way; her worst vice is coffee).

it has flaws. The big one is that because they’re against the rules anyone who doesn’t like what you say can have you kicked off the platform. Had that happen twice.

deleting a Facebook account doesn’t actually do much. The company retains all the information and it can still be used. Also anyone who tags you in a pic automatically links that account so unless both accounts are deleted correctly the deleted account isn’t actually deleted. Facebook doesn’t like people deleting accounts and makes it effectively impossible.

Yeah, I'm sure FB keeps the data, but I'd think "deleting" would make it rather more difficult for random third parties (such as potential employers) to get a hold if it.

There is no privacy on the internet period. Which does make me wonder like, if there are all these monomers (yah I realize most of u s are pretty low rent) checking the internet well, who on earth is checking them checking us it turns into this never ending loop, really.

Oh I get there are search algorithms and whatnot. I don't much want and instragram and a twitter account and all. Although twitter might teach me to like, distill my humor into 25 words or whatever, WHY would I bother? I mean Moby Dick was not tweeted out in 25 word chunks. That book is so underrated.

I'm sure all info is still out there somewhere, but it is possible to delete, not just deactivate:
how to delete facebook - Google Search
What do you bet it's like deleting a file on your computer? The data isn't really gone.

Of course on a computer you have physical access to, you use software to properly wipe files, your you can pull the drive and physically destroy it. E.g. in my business, we like to use old hard drives as targets at the range. :w00t:

No doubt, could even be out in the "cloud" somewhere.
I do the same with my old hard drives...:thumb:
I've heard hammers and Bleach Bit also works

I was put in FB jail twice. The second time I "permanently" deleted the account. Then I started reading just how much they invade one's privacy. Should have read it before right? The word permanently does not exist in Fb world. Comnents are like cockroaches, you can't eliminate them all. There "privacy" policies invade every corner of our computerized lives. I was never on SM while working. I only unleashed myself after I retired. That much I knew. Big mistake. I see efc as a tool to educate and share information with a little humor. Ah, you live and hopefully learn.

    THE RIGHT TO BE FORGOTTEN??????????

WHY do I not have this right Jesus WEPT, I would have all who knew me forget me and I like would return and have these GREAT new relationships... That I might then mess up AGAIN but MAYBE not. I'm older.

I want to be forgotten by everyone (except my kid because I AM a good mom) and just start the (censored) OVER.

Why does the UK have all the good stuff damnit?

Yeah, FB has ALL of it. The time your "frenemy" hacked your account and showed your profile picture as frantically .........ing, ALL of it.

To be fair, were I to collect that amount of data I might want to hold onto it too. Etc.

I would be NICE mostly (surely nicer than FB) but we ALL got chips in us already. Starting to think a nice cabin in the woods....

But it has been a bad week. Pinkeye. A cold. THIS DAMN IT damn THYROID thing. I want to crawl in a hole and die. Doing yoga in 15 minutes for the first time in a week and really, it's too SOON. But I GOTTA.

    Forget me.
