Right Over Here
Okay, so I give Samantha a liquid for the hyperthyroid. Costs me about $60 a year (including shipping)and I get it from a pharmacy that my vet uses, but this is directly with me. Let me know if you want the phone number. The liquid is just easier. That being said, she gets a potassium pill every night and this would be completely impossible without a pill popper. The vet should have these, but you could get one off amazon. I use olive oil or butter on the pill and Sam always gets 5 treats after taking meds. Makes it a positive experience and adds calories. :) Really glad your guy has something treatable!!! Keep us posted!

Catmom - we've given him pills before but they were antidiarrheal and tastes horrible and not coated, so I didn't blame him for bringing them back up. We ended up going the wet cat food route with that. These are coated, so we'll try it first and go from there.

The pills were only $14 for 42 so I was ecstatic about that! They had pill pockets there but he would be one to spit it out or eat everything except the pill :).

Pissy - that's too funny! The funniest thing is it's so true!!

36tinybells - the vet never mentioned liquid but did mention ear drops. I didn't talk to the vet tonight, just the receptionist, but it's definitely a thought. I clean his ears a lot, so we might manage with ear drops but I guess we'll see :). I don't think I've ever heard of a pill popper!! First pill at midnight...Dun, dun, dun!! (My version of dramatic music, lol.)

Ambeck, I'm so glad to read that it's hypothyroidism and that Sprinkles' kidneys show they are in good shape. There are so many advancements nowadays for our fur-babies, thankfully.

I'm sure your vet will guide you on how to keep the kidneys in good shape and what else to watch out for, all while keeping the main problem under control. I hope the drop to normal thyroid level is swift.

There are so many avenues for medications today, especially since so many fur-kid meds are human meds. I get a lot of my fur-kids' meds at Walmart, which is where my local pharmacist told me to go buy them after I did research and found my vet to be the highest price for the meds. Go figure...Walmart. I love my pharmacist.

The prayers will continue for both of you. The relief in your words was joyous to read.

Well, he definitely surprised us with the pills. They are teeny little pink, coated pills. First, we tried to put them in the middle of treats (Pounce, I think), but the treats kept crumbling even though they are moist ones. So, I took the crumbled treats and put them on the floor with the pill in the pile. He gobbled everything right up! We thought it was a fluke and he would realize it, but he didn't. Did the same for his second pill time and he ate it right up again! Haven't noticed too much of a change in his behavior except not quite as meowy which is a good thing.

It's been a while since I updated, but the receptionist neglected to tell me Sprinkles had to have his medicine 4-6 hours before having his blood drawn and he had run out of his medicine the day prior (I did tell her that), so we had a wasted vet trip and had to schedule another one a week later. Anyway, the vet called yesterday or the day before (I LOVE that I get to speak to the vet for results and not receptionist or nurse), and apparently Sprinkles is very sensitive to the meds. He's been taking 5mg a day, 2.5mg in the morning and 2.5mg at night, and his thyroid level went from 15 to 0.5 . It's supposed to be around 4. He had been puking and having ........ a week after starting the meds, so that's probably why. She said to give him 1 a day and go back in a few weeks. Giving him the pill is still super easy; right now, I just put the pill in his mouth, he swallows it, and then I give him a couple of treats. His liver enzymes have normalized as well. So, that's where we stand right now, and he seems to be feeling better and crying less. No weight change that I can see, but he wasn't seen at his last appointment, just had blood drawn. Here's a picture; really stinky, but I had to take it with my phone since my camera's battery died. Thank you all!!
