I've tried a few fruity flavors over the years that might have great reviews, but to me, they are really bitter.

I know that with fresh cilantro used in a salsa, that too much will make it taste like soap to some people, and other folks think it is wonderful. I fall into the "soap" group when it comes to cilantro, and wondered if there are some flavorings that will be nectar of the gods  to some and soap to others. o_O

I'm getting prepared to learn DIY whether I want to or not, and if there are some flavors to avoid, I would like to know sooner than later. The ones that I seem to have problems with are cherry, pomegranate, raspberry. I've found a couple of pre-made berries that were tasty to me, so I think it might depend somewhat on the source of the flavor and not the flavor itself.

It could be the brand of flavoring that is being used. I know that there are a few flavoring vendors that are listed in the DIY Forum - you could ask for opinions there.

Do you order your eliquids with flavor boosts or flavor "shots"? Too much flavor can make eliquids taste off, if not downright unvapeable, depending on how much extra flavor is added.

It could also be that you are super sensitive to whatever sweetener that is being used. I know that my daughter, grandson and I are the oddballs regarding sweeteners like aspartame, splenda, etc., when they are used in food or drink products - to us they make things taste bitter instead of sweet.

There are quite a few variables involved in vaping, and the biggest one is how you perceive flavor with the equipment that you are using. You may have to continue experimenting until you find what is right for you. DIY will give you much better control over the amount of flavoring, sweetener, pg/vg, and nicotine that goes into your eliquid so that you can customize your vape to suit you.

As a fello... erm... person who cannot appreciate cilantro either I know where you are coming from. But I never found a correlation between a dislike of cilantro to a dislike (or preference) for any particular flavorings.

Just go slow buying flavorings when getting into this. Because if there is something in the base carrier a company is using, there is a strong possibility that they are using the same base in many, if not most of their flavor line. If you pick up on that in one flavor you may find there is something you don't like about the rest of them from the same source.

I always ordered "off the shelf" with the e-liquids and actually didn't know you could make special requests.

I never considered that there might be sweeteners added, but if a vendor uses one kind of sweetener in one finished liquid, and a different sweetener in a different liquid, that could explain why I could taste a difference. I don't like sweet drinks, but remember that I used to avoid some brands of diet soda because they made me feel sick when other brands did not.

Would I be able to tell what the base carrier is before I order? Is the base like water, alcohol, or some other fluid plus the flavor ingredients?

It should be part of the product description, and if the place doesn't mention it I would ask. Typically it will be high levels of PG or alcohol. Some places will have at least part of a product line available in high VG as well.

I feel the same about cilantro. Definitely strikes me as soapy. I'm not sure if this will be helpful or not but I've found that I don't particularly care for most juice with a lot of lemon flavor. Even that in fruit loops cereal based liquids can often be a bit too lemony for me. Something about it comes off to me as kind of ammonia-y. Not pleasant.

I think I'm ok with lemony flavors, I've enjoyed a few lemonade liquids in the past. I did have a skittles type of flavor that was bitterish, but I blamed that on the cherry.

The vendor does seem to use a cherry flavor ingredient that does not work for me as I've had several of their liquids with a cherry component that have all been unpleasant for me. Since these were all high-nic juices, I've just kept them aside, and may use them diluted with plain pg/vg to make a low-nic liquid. I hope taking them from 18 mg down to 3 mg will make them more vapeable.

I usually order online. Some vendors do offer extra flavoring. Sometimes the option is listed on the same page where you specify your preferred nicotine, pg and vg options, sometimes you need to put a request in the "Comments" section just before you finalize your order.

When trying a new flavor or vendor, I usually get the smallest bottle possible "as is", that is, with no extra flavor. If my daughter and I like the flavor but feel it is a little weak or muted, then we consider whether to request more flavor on the next order.
