Is it OK to use UR18500 Sanyo batteries in my mechanical mod?

I pulled the batteries out of the package and immediately was disappointed - they have no button! Is it OK to use these? Did I make a mistake ordering these? What's the real difference between having a button and not having one?

Thanks.

Thanks for including the pic. A link would have been nice, too. I searched Google and found some suppliers of this battery. Normally I've heard that Sanyo is a high quality battery. However none of the sites that carry these say that this is a "protected" battery. 18500 rechargeable li-ion Sanyo Battery 3.7V I've never even seen the label "UR" on a battery before. It should have ICR or NCR and plainly state in the product description that it is a protected battery.

Personally, unless someone else can say different, I wouldn't use that battery in a mod. You need to be sure it is either a protected Li Ion battery or a safe chemistry IMR battery to use in a mod. This battery appears to be neither.

Some mods are designed to only fit a button top battery. This prevents the user from putting the battery in backwards and possibly causing a bad thing from happening.

To help you understand the batteries used in mods, read this guide that I recently made. Battery Basics for Mods: Protected or IMR?

If it helps, I have two mechanical mods now - a really high end one, and a piece o'crap cheap one from Fasttech.

Here is the good one:

and here is the cheap one:

I bought the cheap one because it's kind of a perfect color match for my new Aurora BFT (bottom fed tank system) but as soon as I pulled it out of the envelope today, I regretted wasting my time with it. It looks and feels so horribly cheap after holding the Origin.

Anyway, I only want to use high quality batteries, even in the cheap mod, so should I just throw the Sanyos out?

What resistance do you normally run?

So you are asking expert level questions of a novice vaper, but I'm going to try and answer as best I can. I bought the Origin - it's my very first mechanical... mainly I bought it because I have been wanting a Caravela since the day I started vaping, and can't get one (real tears), and it was the closest thing I could find aesthetically.

As soon as I got it, I tried my various tanks on it and soon discovered that mechanical mods don't work well with carto tanks and Protanks, etc - they need low resistance tanks like rebuildables to produce good vapor because they don't deliver as much voltage as say, a Provari (which was my first real vaping purchase). Luckily for me, although I do not own a rebuildable (yet), I happened to have a carto tank that was hand-blown - it's only like 1.8 ohms. That works great on the Origin - produces wonderful clouds.

But again, this is all brand new to me. What I like about mechanicals is that they are pretty, and I'm an aesthetics hound. As far as function goes, I love my Provari because it can handle anything I want to put on it. But let's face it - it's not that attractive to look at.

So that's where I'm at - I know my future lies in RBA's but I can't pull the trigger yet. Kinda nervous about doing the whole "build it yourself" thing without someone here to show me the ropes.

I just want to set up my Origin at it's smallest size with an 18350 and be sure I've got the highest quality battery possible in it for the price. That's because I want it tiny. I like tiny.

As for the cheap purple crappy mechanical, looks like it only takes 18500's or 18650's. And I hate it already. But still, if I'm, going to vape on it, I want something safe.

What's the best price for an 18350 protected, high quality? I want to set up my Origin at the smallest setting, and I want to put something top of the line in it. But I also want to save money (obv).
Ordinarily I would recommend an AW, but they don't make an 18350 protected battery.

They do make an 18350 IMR, which would inherently be safer than a protected battery in my opinion. The AW 18350 IMR (recommended) can be found here: Batteries : AW IMR 18350 3.7V 700mAh

If you must have a protected battery, there are Efests. I've not had much luck with them, but many people swear by them. I recently purchased a pair of Efest IMR 18350 and a pair of Efest IMR 14500 batteries and ended up removing them from my rotation because they went from 6 hours on a charge down to 3 hours after only 3 weeks of use. Very disappointing. Based on experience, I wouldn't put much stock in the higher mAh rating of the protected Efest over AW. I use AW IMR in all of my mods.

Thanks so much. These were more than I wanted to spend but I bit the bullet and ordered the 18350 IMRs from RTD. Appreciate the linkage.

Look at it this way. If you end up putting an RDA or RBA on your new mech, you'll be already better equipped with the AW IMR's than you would with the protected Efests.

cant go wrong with AW. dont use them anymore but they were always reliable and very strong, good stuff.

i think you can find 1.5 ohm carto's for your tank though. the lower the resistance the longer you can vape without changing a battery on a mech. a higher resistance will still work but you will notice the vape gets cooler sooner, as the wattage dies off.

but wow what a sharp mod.....................

yea im an 18650 guy. i havent ever used a 350. but im a big guy and even a full provari with 650 cap is still not too large to me.

bad is correct right now im in love with the new pd2900. getting awesome life in a mech on a 1 ohm coil.

I also ordered some of the panny 3400's they are not high drain only 6.8 amp but i dont see myself needing that much anyways. not sure yet as i try to judge after the battery has had 4 or 5 charges. and lasting 3 1/2 days is making that problematic lol

and i cant say I actually stopped using the aw's (2000mah) i just dont use them when i go out. in my setup rig and around the house they still rock.
