Is it worth trying to build and sell a mod these days?

With the choices out now, unless it's something unique that someone else already hasn't come up with it wouldn't be worth the time or trouble to build a mod with the intention to sell it imo. A VV mod with a LCD screen can be had for < $30 now. Sure it's a cheap body and many will consider it disposable but it's < $30.

So unless you're doing it for yourself, your own enjoyment, to give to someone, you need it or it's something unique, I don't see the point.

Now if you're doing it for yourself, sure it's worth it, the OKR regulators if you want VV are cheap, easy to build, work great and you can design it the way you want it.

Anything is worth trying at least once. I have some ideas kickin' around in my head, no clue if they'll work or not, no clue if they'd sell, but I'm going to at least try to make a few for myself. If they can sell, even better. New bits n kits are coming out almost daily it seems, you could have exactly what people are looking for. You won't know unless you try.

If it's successful, there WILL be imitations. Lots of them. There's factories overseas ready to be retooled to mass produce the next big thing. How you treat your customers and your final build quality will make all the difference.

Well. . Whatever it is won't be terribly pretty (believe me) but it will be something no one else even thought of- and extremely useful- I'm curious to know if everyone would just rip it off and start making it cheaper than I can, or if people are pretty loyal in terms of buying from the inventor .. or what

If its worth being ripped off, it will be.

You would do better making accessories than you would do making mods anymore. There are already enough battery holders to choose from.
If you check out some of the well established mod makers, many of them are already making their living selling eGo's and batteries.

But on the other hand
Have you seen this Nevil controlled mod by Mamu?

Aluminum alloy case and end caps. Dual 18350 AW IMR batts in parallel - 1400mAh with 11.2A discharge current. I got 13 hours of vaping time running a 1.5 ohm DCC at 14 Watts before needing a charge.

You might want to check out Click-Bang if you want a chance to win one of the three she made.

I had a homemade, elegant, VW, unique mod on the classies for a couple days this week. Not even a nibble. Price was high, but not outrageous IMO. The mod didn't have a bunch of bells, whistles, blinkie lights or anything, but was a powerhouse, none the less. I expected an offer (listed OBO) at least.

My advice would be to build for YOUR enjoyment. Post pics. If someone offers to buy, great. Don't bank on making a business of building something that can be readily had on the market.

Who ever made that is amazing. Her hands must be golden. That is wonderful. That reminds me of those wooden ones, the Gepetto http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...pplier-forum/271406-gepetto-box-mod-sale.html

Is that a micro usb charging port? I'm drooling ...

That's kind of what I thought, build one for me and see who wants it..

Personally, I have no issues making my own mods...but I'm not willing to accept what ever liability may eventually come along should a failure occur in the hands of a sue happy idiot....SOMEONE will eventually sue over a unit failure, like causing a fire or injury...sadly people just get sue happy....so no selling mods for me...

Additional thought....kits may be safe, as the end user has to build it themselves. So if they fudge it up, it is all on them I would think....

There are ways around that if you're that concerned... personally I'd include a pile of warnings and do my damned well level best and then some to make sure I never gave anyone unsafe. I love vaping. I believe in it to be a life saving thing that I'd like to promote in any way possible.... I'd never want to send anything to anyone that could harm them.. personal liability aside, even in terms of any bad publicity it could cause

Anything and everything that can will get ripped off and copied...I fly R/C helicopters and for every box that is put out the front door of a Chinese sweat shop, 5 more under different names go out the back door. Make something unique, useful and FDA approved...then you are on to something...

*I say build for yourself, if people see it and request it, then you can one off all day long...

My buddy just built a box mod; it runs off 3 batteries and with a 5ohm HR carto measures a hair over 29W. When my friends and I first got into this, he built all our mods, but said it felt "too much like a job". He still builds the occasional mod- he's currently building me a 5v tube mod a la the Silver Bullet (let the bltching begin!).

At the risk (LOL, like I care) of getting flogged by the "experts": you don't need all the bells and whistles unless it makes you feel better. It doesn't matter if what you make is fancy, or can tell you the time in Algeria while you vape, or has blinky lights, or whatever. YOU made the device- that's worth being proud of all by itself. If it takes off, more power to you, though with all the fandom that goes on in these forums I wish you good luck.
