So, I have an innokin coolfire boxmod that I use an isub tank with, which I love. When I initially abandoned my eGo kit, my thoughts were that I wasn't very interested in mechmods.... Why mess with all that stuff when there's perfectly good box mods that are easy?

Well, with this FDA crap going on, I'm in prepping for disaster mode, and want to learn what I can about mechmods, since it'd be pretty difficult to regulate batteries.

Is there a beginners guide to mechmods anywhere? I know that you need an ohm meter, and that you can blow them up if you're careless, and that's about it. I'm looking for a crash course, and maybe some recommendations for good cheap beginner mechs.

I like vaping sub ohm (around .5, nothing super low), and I like being able to adjust my wattage. Are these things that can be done with a mechmod? I usually vape between 20 and 32 watts.

With unregulated mods, your wattage output is determined by battery voltage and the atomizers net resistance... this value is calculated using Ohm's law formulas.

Atomizer builds must be optimized, primarily for wire gauge and coil count in parallel... to obtain a desirable balance of temperature (heat flux) and high net coil surface area.

As stated above unfortunately there is no way to adjust your wattage/voltage on the fly. It takes a few builds on a mech mod to find your sweet spot but once that's done it's rock solid. What I did since I am new to mech mods as well is I figured out what wattage I liked to vape on using one of my VW/VV mods then used steam engine to figure out what resistance I had to build my coils at. It took me two builds to dial it in & now I'm very pleased with my vape. If you're considering mech mods you have a lot of choices. I decided on Reo since I loved to drip vs a tank, with a squonk box I have easy dripping with the easy use of a tank, just a squeeze here & there & I am golden. I would highly recommend a Reo if you have the slightest interest in squonking, they are made in the US, pretty much bomb proof & the owner is an active member here. I would also highly recommend squonking if you love dripping, no messy hands, can put it in my pocket & I can squonk while I drive :thumb:

Thanks guys.... I;m working my way through all that stuff, there's quite a lot of it. Quick question, sometimes when I'm bored I dick around on FastTech's website, just looking at all the shiny stuff (and checking my tracking and sighing deeply).... I just noticed they have a category of 'Hybird' mech mods? What are these, and how do they differ from a regular mech mod? Or is it just a marketing term?

A hybrid mech doesn't have a general purpose, one-size-fit's-most 510 top cap... but rather a "floating" (at least as far as the tube threads allow) top cap with no independent 510, telescopic positive post set.
The atomizer post is in direct contact with the battery positive... where clearance, atty 510 negative length/510 positive pin protrusion and battery terminal type become critical to prevent shorting to ground.

A hybrid may also indicate a mech/atty set, where an RBA is "married" to a mech by a common atty base/mech top... restricting it's use to only that assembly.

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but you could convert a mechanical mod into a variable wattage device with a Kick. This is a drop-in circuit board module with buck & boost circuitry and adds some electronic circuit protection to a mech. Depending upon the mod, you may need to drop from an 18650 battery to a shorter 18490/18500 battery to make room for the Kick. Some mech mods have extension sleeves or extension tubes available to be able to use an 18650 battery.
