Is there a difference?

I also think it's not just the amount of time it lasts but how long your optimal voltage is sustained at a high level. My personal name for this is the "Drain Curve". (think i've seen charts on this somewhere too.)

What happens for me is that with the smaller batteries like 14500 or 16340 is that while I might get 4-6 hrs of use out of the battery before it shuts off, if I take a multimeter reading every hr during that time it will show the battery dropping below the 3.9-4.0 area very quickly..usually within the first hr. On the other hand I get about 6-7 hrs usage within that voltage range on the 18650, maybe hitting 3.8-3.9 by late nite when it hits the charger.

The end result of this is that my smaller batteries tend to give me more atty and juice trouble because they basically at some point are not as efficient in "burning" the juice. So the first hr I'm vaping away..happy as a clam..then top off again and bamm..flooded atty or vapor production drops noticeably..etc..that kind of thing. With the 18650..it stays very consistent and dependable throughout the day. It also drastically extends my atty lifespan because it's not getting clogged and flooded all the time.

On the other side of this discussion are LR and HV atties..but for the most part I use stock 510 and 901 atties and also cartomizers. I don't really want to expend extra money for the LR/HV stuff because it's just too sensitive and I prefer to take nice long draws without risk of blowing my atty. However you can "fake" the longer drain curve of the 18650 with the smaller batteries using LR/HV attys and still get that extended vaping experience and consistency.

In the end..it's still a personal choice. Hope that helps.

It can be compared between a 4 and 6 cyclinder.

more like a 10 gallon tank and a 28.89gallon tank

your comparison would be more for a 3.7v vs 6v
or 3ohm to 1.5ohm

but I am sure you knew that.... I assume you are good with electronics, just bad with analogies :D

No, I am talking of the delta between 4 and 6 cylinders. mAh = the size of the gas tank.

The average 14500 has a continuous discharge rate of 2-2.5A, whilst the normal 18650 has a continuous discharge rate of 4A. Which one is working harder?

I thought the metaphor was useful to the question, without getting too technical. We could really start confusing issues if we throw in HD batts or 8 cylinders :)

well you could have been a bit technical by including this post :D
I was only thinking of the Mah with the OP's question

so with this added knowledge your analogy fits :D

Hey Switched...I knew about watts and drain curve..but hadn't heard about discharge rate..that would explain even more of what I experience with the 18650's...cool! Thx for extra info!
U R Welcome!

There is so much batt information out there that it gets confusing. I like to keep things simple. I remember my first experience when I asked a similar question. Wow! by the time I was done reading my head spinned, and I wasn't vaping high octane :D

Now keeping it non technical lets throw an 8 cylinder in a volkswagon an IMR 14500 batt. Sorry these are new so I dont have the specs on them.

Yes battery technology is a beast of its own...

@Switched maybe your post structure should be this

Abridged: ..................

Unabridged.................................................................................

Yeah I will be getting my first experience with IMRs in the near future... I was hesitant to jump on the bandwagon, but I have heard so much rave about them.. I will have to see for myself... if I notice a difference I will have to do some more research... but I still probably won't put an 8 cylinder in a VW unless it was a Karmann Gia :p

of course that would be on a case by case basis :D
