Is there a need to sub ohm?

Hi all,

I've read from various forums and threads on ecf that sub ohming is actually more relevant to the earlier generation vapers using mech mods. With the introduction of vv/vw mods, it's actually not necessary to sub ohm as vv/vw mods can have adjusted to different volts/watts.

Im sharing this because I'm still looking for a balance for my setup. Hot vape/cold vape?
Battery life?
juice consumption?
Throat hit?
Vapor production?

Any inputs to enlighten me?

Now the question is not whether you need it. It's whether you want it. I have a few rdas and tanks all ranging between 0.2 ohms and 1.5 ohms. Just try2 bro. Adjust to taste, not to numbers. We not robot. Hehe.

here are my 2 cents electrically,

1. Hot/cold vape is actually determined by wattage and gauge of wire used. (heat flux)
2. Battery life is tied to wattage used as shown in point 1
3. In my opinion juice consumption should be determined by heat flux and surface area also links to point 1
4. Throat hit mainly is affected by heat flux as well (temp of coil)
5. Vapor production is a combination of heat, airflow and surface area I suppose(but I don't really chase cloud so my opinion on this is a moot point) (links to juice consumption)

All in all I believe you can balance all that with the combination of wattage settings and gauge of wire used with no specific relation to resistance(ohm) of coil as wattage already encompass ohm calculation.
Main takeaway is wattage + heatflux(gauge of wire) + surface area so no there's no need for sub ohm and it all boils down to personal preference in the end. (higher gauge wires produces more heat in exchange with lesser surface area which is related to higher ohm)

TLDR: All boils down to personal preference in terms of vape experience rather than balancing everything.

I vape at 3ohms because I like a nice cool vape and long battery life.

To subohm or not to subohm depends on yourself.. do you want it? subohming is usually associated with cloud chasing and if you want to blow out huge clouds, yes you'll need to subohm. if you plan of getting into subohming, then battery safety is very IMPORTANT.. you do not want to over stress your batteries and have it explode in your face.

Not true that subohming is more relevant to mech mods as for very low builds, you will need all the power you can get from a regulated mod and to me subohming in a regulated mod is safer then a mech mod. I've seen crazy builds with as low as a 0.1ohm and firing at 150watts.. you can't get 150watts from a mech mod.

To look for a balance for your set up, you have to find out what you like, what your preferences are.. the good thing about vaping is that there is no one specific way to do something.. as long as you research battery safety and the know the limits of your mod, then your good to go..

Hot vape/cold vape?
boils down to what you like, your preference.. for me i like a warm vape but on some juices i like a colder vape..

Battery life?
for batteries, the general rule of thumb is the more power you draw, the less it will last.. even if your firing at a low wattage and you chain vape like crazy, battery life will still not last..

Juice consumption?
juice consumption depends on you but if your using a subohm tank, you will end up consuming more juice. Even if your dripping on an rda, say its a juice you like, you'll end up dripping more and hence consuming more juice. so this all depends on your usage and how you vape. i have friends that can finish 120mils in a day! I also have friends that have a bottle of 30mils that could last them for a month..

Throat hit?
again this is your preference, do you like a stronger TH or a smoother one? and depending on the juice, the TH will effect how the juice tastes like to you.. for me the stronger the TH, the lesser i will vape.. I've tried a 12mg juice and i still have that bottle lying around.. LOL

Vapor production?
do you like to see lots of smoke and fog up your room after a few draws? do you like to just have the flavour of the juice in your mouth but is ok with just light smoke? there are products that give you awesome flavour and chuck out clouds so its a win win for both the flavour chasing spectrum and cloud chasing spectrum.

Experiment and find out what you like.. What i might like you might not and what you like i might not like.. we're all unique and have our own preferences. Most important of all do some research first before trying something out and battery safety is the MOST IMPORTANT! Vape Safe and Vape on bro!

To think of it.. it's a customisation of it preference... Compare to cigs.. u just smoke what is given in the box.. it's a freedom of choice and preference. Main thing is to avoid dry hits and leaking tanks while vaping.. my two cents.

Now that's a lot of info for my to absorb and will need some time for it to sink in. Besides, I'm on a goblin mini using dual coils with 11 wraps each and Ive tried 5 wraps each at 0.24 ohms. Both setups are gunking up my coils real bad. It's just I have to change cotton every tank. Is it really my juice? I remember Cloud chaser honeydew not gunking up my coils so badly. Are there any other factors?

mostly its your juice(the sweeter the juice, the more gunking) and also how high you are firing..

If it is more for convenience, one can be satisfied with 2mm, 4/5 coil of Kanthal .32. Assuming if 1 is using mechanical mod where there are no variable in play. This is where I am at. Just plain fuss-free maintainance for people busy with life. I change my coil + wick once a month. I don't go through juice as fast as a person who sub ohm.

And then there will be people using Variable Voltage/ Wattage going higher ohm builds like 4 or 5ohm.

I think you got the burnt taste cos of the wicking. Maybe the ends might be blocking the channels. If you're using a high VG juice leave the channels slightly open.

26g is too thick. Just use 32-28 guage wires. 7-8 wraps 3.0mm ID should get you ard 1-1.5 ohms.

Sorry for the late reply, as I don't frequent the forums nowadays.

To share with you, I am using an RDA. And my build is 4/3 coil of 32 gauge kanthal over 2 strands of 1mm ekowool. Didn't measure it out, to be honest. But by my calculations, it would be about 1.2 ~ 1.4ohms. Couldn't be arsed by how many ohms I get nowadays. As long as I get a decent vape, I don't go through my juice twice as much as I used to, then it is already a win for me.

If you have a mini deck, and you wish to go higher ohm, get higher gauge wires. EG: .32, .34... Of course, there is the question of how one handle the malleability of wires of those gauges.

I don't really understand electrical terms, but I very much prefer a 3ohm 12watts vape over a 1.5ohm 12 watts vape. But that was a long time ago, when they had just DNA12. And I don't know why too. XD

I vape 1ohm at 16watts and 0.3ohm at 45watts, both are warm, 1 ohm produces less vapour tho density is the same. Flavour wise both ok, so I guess the difference is personal preference xD

Oh and wicking affects flavour too, if you really want to think that much about it :x

I have a goblin mini and it has been perfect for me so far after I have learnt how to wick well. My standard build is a dual 26awg, 2.5mm ID at 8 wrap for 1Ω per coil. The trick is to use as less of a wick as you can while still having enough to prevent dry hit. Say if you have a 2.5mm ID, Cut around 2.5mm to 3.0mm in width of cotton. You are getting dry hit due not enough cotton wick. Try and experiment with the amount of cotton until you find the sweet spot.

Well I guess the simple answer for me is I'm a lung hitter, and I love sub ohm vaping.. .. I gave away all my tight airflow tanks that used the 1.2 ohm+ coils, as well as my low powered mods..I guess they were OK as a newbie vaper three yrs ago, but I quickly learned I needed something better if I was to stay tobacco free..so I got into mechs, learned about ohms law and battery safety building my RDA's usually between .21-.25 ohms..much, much better nicotine delivery sub ohming for sure...and airflow was alot better too..
Then got into these high powered dual batt VW mods I use today..batt life is great with these mods, and they can fire all my subtanks and RDA's safely with power to spare..juice usage is not really a issue for me..the money I save not buying 4 cartons of Marlboro a month anymore buys alot of juice, lol
The reason I love sub ohm vaping is that it satisfies my acquired nicotine addiction, keeping me completely tobacco free, which the main reason I chose to vape in the first place.

Hahaha 26g is not thick man, Some have used 24g in their goblin mini!

I have a tfv4 tank. I use the 22awg Kanthal A1 coil, 2.5mm ID at 12 wraps. I get about 0.65ohms and am vaping it at 70w without any dry or throat hits.

Looks like it's time for me to get higher gauges wire to go for higher resistance. I've got prolly enough 26g to go round the stadium track once tho. Anyway now I'm on a 8 wrap spaced coil 2mm id and it's working fine for me. My main issue is prolly the coils gunking up quickly but it's working fine so far and can last me prolly 3 tanks before rewicking.
