Is there a way to salvage Perfume?

made my first DIY batches yesterday. Letting them steep so I haven't tried them yet. But I checked out a chat forum last night and heard that I may have 7 -10ml bottles of perfume on my hands. All my recipes use the same base and NIC strength. Here is an example of 1 flavor. NIC is %100 VG not PG...... NIC strength 18mg, target NIC 12mg, amount made 10ml. flavor 1 -10%, flavor 2 -10%. Recipe result.. 6.67 ml of NIC, 1 ml PG, .33ml VG. 1ml flavor 1, 1ml flavor 2. Feel free to plug into a flavor calculator to help me with this please. basically what i'm asking is if 1 did %20 flavor and really only needed %10. Can I just add another 7.67ml of PG/VG mix to dilute this to %10 flavor and get the volume up to 20ml. Or just scrap the whole idea of a salvage operation and start over. I wont worry about the target NIC of 12mg for this batch I just want the flavor to be salvageable..

You have 10 ml of juice at 20% total flavor. Whether it is too strong or not depends on a few things. It depends on how strong the flavors are and how strong you like your juices.

I'd try out what you have first and see what you think. If its too strong, you can definitely dilute it. Diluting the whole batch you have could be a big waste of nic. For example, say you try 1 ml, and have 9 left. You decide to dilute the remaining 9 ml by half, by adding 9 ml of unflavored to give you a total volume of 18 ml. Say you try that, and now decide its too weak. You could then go about adding more flavor to try to salvage it. This can become time consuming and wasteful.

Another option would be to just dilute a portion of it (after tasting it). Perhaps take 1 ml of your original recipe and dilute with 1 ml of unflavored juice. Now, you can try this new recipe which is at half the strength of the original without the wasting your entire 9 ml. If your half dilution is too weak, you can take another 1 ml and dilute it say, 3:4 (3 parts original to 1 part unflavored). If it's still too strong, you can dilute it 1:4 (1 part original to 4 parts unflavored), etc...

Basically, I'm saying you've got this 20% recipe now, you can definitely get some good information from it if you don't want to waste it.

Great response from Spazmelda ^^^^^^. Totally agree. And no you haven't wasted anything yet., Btw, my ADV is 46% flavoring, though I make flavors all the time in the <10% range. Just depends on the concentrate you use.

Right, the flavors are so variable. I just got a pineapple that was overwhelming at 1 tiny drop in 3 ml (appx 0.4% with the dropper I was using). Then I've got other flavors that are subtle at 5-10%. I tend to like my juices more lightly flavored these days though. When I started, my favorite recipe was at about 25% total flavoring, now I've had to reduce it down to 10% total flavoring because it became unbearably strong to me. Taste buds are widely variable and can definitely change over time.

The thing to remember about all things Internet is that everyone has an opinion. Some will state that their opinion is fact, regardless of how wrong it may be. When it comes to DIY, taste is subjective. As long as YOU'RE happy with the results, you can pretty much ignore the self proclaimed experts.

Thanks folks, I think my first try would be to not fill my tank all the way, use 1 ml, and add a 50/50 pg/vg mix to try and soften it up if it needs it. could I do the additional liquid directly into my tank or do I need to do it in another bottle, let it steep and go for it again.. Why add anything at all right now? Try a little bit, and if it's too strong, then start cutting it. But don't start in with diluting until you know that your creation is too strong for your tastes.

It was pretty crazy Bill. My favorite adv just one day became unbearably too much. Too sweet, too much flavor. I had to decrease both the flavors and the sweetener. My adv now would probably be practically flavorless to the newbie me.

@ retired1, Yes I will give it a go as is at first, I just wanted to know what my options were if it came out completely horrible and was over flavored. I know DIY is subjective and I might like it the way it is, but I didn't want to re do all my batches on the first try. I used almost all my NIC base making these, (only got a 60ml to start with). so I would be down for the count on a new batch until I got more NIC. but I have plenty of pg/vg left to cut it with if need br.

Hoof, there is a lot you can do with these mixes if they turn out to be not what you are looking for. Like I said above, you can dilute. You can also mix two together in varying proportions. It takes some math to back engineer a recipe when you do stuff like this, but if you keep good notes it can definitely be done.

I used an e-juice calculator for all of them , entered the recipes and printed out the result, so I have a hard copy of my work. its all documented so making adjustments should not be terribly difficult.

Exactly! One of the things I did when i first started was to just make up, like 20% of various flavors, and then combine x amount of this with y amount of that. If you know how much of x and y you added, and their original percentages, then you can back calculate a recipe.

Doesn't' take long to learn that the calculator is a good baseline, so you use one, brew it up, steep it, try it, then adjust to taste. Just like cooking, you find a new recipe, try it as it is written, then tinker with it and make it better.

Ok I ran out of my purchased premixes and couldn't wait any longer. so I gave one of my first DIY batches a try. 24 hr steep. Cheesecake flavor 20% flavor 30 pg/70 vg. First impression, NOT TOO SHABBY... wasn't as perfumy as I was told to expect. Kind of tastes like slightly Parmesan Reggiano cheese. LOL not exactly cheese cake but I like Parmesan cheese. good vapor. I did 1ml in a tank then added 1ml pg on top to thin and subdue flavor as a test. Still not cheese cake but as a first time try with not enough steep time I think I can make it work.
