I think you have to worry about spending too much for a dog from a bad breeder. If it's a good breeder who health tests, shows, and has at least 2 year health guarantees, then go for it. If not, it's always buyer beware. You don't want to pay an arm and a leg for a dog that is going to cost you thousands in veterinary expenses.

Lots of backyard breeders have ZERO business handling animals imo. It's very wise, like stated above to do your homework on where you're getting your critter from. You may end up supporting someone you'd normally despise. In a perfect world, everyone would pick up some poor pooch from the pound. Lots of them there. Every so often, I drop a lost dog off at the humane shelter. It always tears me up to see them all. Would probably be pretty hard to find a chiuaua there though lol.

I'm pretty positive this isn't a puppy mill. Might be a breeder that only has a couple dogs. My mom has always raised and sold cheap siamese kittens (she thinks everybody should be able to afford them), but she always only had 2 parents at once. I don't see any other posts that look similiar indicating they are from the same person. She's going to meet me somewhere public instead of having me go to her. And i'm getting a crate and food for this particular dog. I would think if it was a breeder I'd have to meet them at their place (they wouldn't want to meet up anywhere), but I definately don't think I'd be getting the crate and food too. Not sure that we'll ever use the crate, but it was only $15 more :) I could be wrong though.

Crates aren't a bad thing imo. My cousins dog sleeps in his, even when the door is open lol. I think they are good training tools too.

K, well this thread has turned into something different than what I started out trying to do. I was just asking if ya'll thought it was bad that I was spending more on a dog than I did on her engagement ring set. Kinda being silly and thinking maybe other people would mention how they spent more on one thing than they did on something else that should have been more imporant. But now people are coming here and telling me that I'm a bad person for not adopting a mixbreed dog that nobody else wants. This wasn't about the dog itself and my choice in where I'm getting the dog. Whatever...

Nah, not a bad person. It's just something that makes me sad whenever I go to the pound. The dog you are getting will need to be loved too.

Uba, it wasn't so much what you said as what others had said. You were just stating facts, not pushing off any judgement. Of course, it was still off topic, but it didn't have any negativity in it. I can see that. It's the people that come into a thread, with no intention of discussing the topic that the OP posts, but just finds a way to try to get all the attention on themselves because maybe their mother didn't give them enough as a child (to the rest of the world we know their mother gave them WAY TOO MUCH).
