I've been wanting to make a mod. I came up with an idea that I haven't heard ANYone talking about so far. How would it do to take a PC Power supply without any out any MOBO hooked up. Take the 5v line and ground line and run that to a switch and eventually a 510 connector. Do you guys think this would make sense? You would never have to worry about venting, maybe just popping the surge protector you're plugged into. I would actually put it to a long tube of some sort and mount it inside my MAME cabinet I'm building since it's obviously not in any way mobile.

What you are saying is using a AC to DC power supply to power a mod.
Ah like wouldn't it be a bit confining, as an ATX power supply is rather bulky, don't you think?
You know we do have USB and direct DC bypasses that power a mod, right?

It just doesn't seem all that practical.
First you need to check how many amps the PS of you choice actually can put out at 5 volts.
After that - will it even turn on with a load only connected to the +5 line and ground? Something else you need to check.
Then - all that cycling of the cooling fan turning on and off every time you take a draw. Really?

Bulky yeah undoubtedly but a cheap very clean DC supply. Would be neat to have at a workbench though. As for turning it on there sites that can give you pin-out details for the supply switch lead to ground out (as I don't remember).

cmon...first off..it's 5 volt...who cares if that 5vdc is backed by 400million gazillion amps...ohms law thru a whatever ohm coil (lets say 3.0Ω will only pull how much current?) Same principle on a USB bypass plugged into a 3.1amp cigarette lighter USB charger...
I have a always on power supply for my Ham radio portable rig (that I use as a base station in my house Yaesu FT-2900), in order to have stability though he will need to put a 10Ω 10watt wire wound resistor on the 5vdc line to ground...then just short the green line to ground and it will be "always on"
I always wanted to get say 10-15 USB connectors solder em to a really long skinny PCB and make a USB charger station, hook up to a 300-400 watt converted computer power supply...5vdc 30+~amps...

You can use any old mod laying around!
Go to your local hardware store and buy a electric dryer pigtail.
Solder the leads appropriately to your mod, and be sure AC power is off when you plug it in to test.
Plug in the cord to your dryer receptacle.
Have someone wearing insulated clothing turn on the power.
Call 911 to come and pick up whats left and bury your remains!

P.S. AC is much much different from DC
Speaking as some one that's gotten drunk and built a mod out of his soldering stand, I completely support your endeavor. This would be fairly easy to do and I don't think you should stop at just the vaporizer - for instance you could also attach a phone PSU/charger, an MP3 player, etc. You'd have plenty of extra power anyway.
I never even thought of the soldering iron idea. I have an old-ish ESD safe Weller soldering station with extra leads. It wouldn't be tough at all, but I imagine you have to set it to a LOW number. Like I said. I have no intention of it being in any way portable. I would eventually look at building it into my homemade arcade machine. It would be mainly a "gee whiz" type device just because I can and it would be need to add to the cabinet.
buld one a long time ago ...is in the modding forum ...called it power vaping brick...most usefull mod I ever made.for so many uses I would not be without it !! used an rca plug for the variable voltage out put ...not only for vaping ..
limited the power output to 10 amps with circuit breakers . a v and a meter is if not a must but very nice for experimenting .
