is vg a coil killer?

I think there is more to the story than it seems. I DIY and run all 50/50 mixes. My coils last just as long as they did when I was running 70/30.
Most recipes have to be adjusted to more Flavoring to keep the same dynamics as with lower vg mixes. This increases the things that caramelize in your liquids.
Vaping unflavored 50/50 almost has no effect on my coils beyond natural wear from heat cycling. Rich desert flavors, cappuccinos, etc. shorten the life a bit.

I remember seeing somewhere that using higher vg juices will kill coils in tanks faster then a higher pg juice. But i get too much throat hit from anything above 60 vg 40 pg. I was wondering if vaping this will kill a coil faster then a 50/50 mix

I'd agree with the post above. In my experience it's the sweeter and darker e-liquids that have more effect on coils than just higher VG ratios.

Thick juices tend to gunk up your wick faster giving you less vapor and flavor. So you need to replace your wicking material more often - e.g. cotton. They also gunk up your coil, but you can easily clean your coil by removing the wick and dry burning the coil. The heat will burn away the gunk, just like with your stove, oven, or bbq grill. So thicker VG juices should not reduce the life of your coil, just your wicks.

As someone who has been using only high VG since I started vaping I have to conclude the "VG kills coils" is a myth. Sweeteners in liquids will crud up a coil and wick, but I've run tobacco flavor liquids in Kanger BCC stuff for up to three weeks before they needed cleaning. But put a flavor like Chocolate Fudge Brownie in there and the coil will be a mucked up mess in less than 48 hours.

That, and "user error" kills coils fast, running them hotter than necessary - when someone thinks "more watts is better" - just because you can. The design of the overall device - combined with the liquid, it's PG/VG ratio, and the flavorings involved - dictates what wattage works best.

I've vaped up to 90% VG and didn't find it gunked my coils any faster than 30% VG. Like others have said, the flavorings in the juice mater a lot more. They can make the difference between a build needing to be dry burned every 10 ml of juice or every 100 ml.

In my experience TH is way more influenced by nicotine level than by PG content. I vape zero nic juice and I've tried a lot of different ways to get TH. Nothing I've found does that anything like nic.

BTW, with high VG juice, you can thin it by adding some distilled water. I'm vaping a 50% VG juice right now that I put 3% water into. That makes it thin enough so it wicks like a 70% PG juice and the flavor is the same as without any water added.

I agree with the majority, I vape 20/80VG & 0/100VG and coil/wick last
a long, long time…
add some sweet flavor to the mix and gunk build up occurs fairly qwik...
I like to say:
don’t confuse poor wicking (dry hits) , with residue build up (gunk)
one is thick, one is sweet...

- - -

BBQ-ing on the grill
on the grate: chicken / ribs / burgers – you keep cooking for the crowd
you just know when to clean the grate – add in the brushed on BBQ sauce
and you’ll have to clean the grate sooner…

My experience, max VG with a very light fruit flavor, 6 mg of nic in a bottom fed atty on my Reo. I like to re-wick at least a couple times a week using Koh Gen Do. Have never had to re-coil before I got tired of the coil (or bored)

I usually re-coil every month or two for each of my seven bf attys.

After a particularly gunky juice, I have heated the coils and carefully dipped them in water while still hot. Was really surprised at how much of the gunk comes off after a couple dunkings. Looks like carbon and the coils look almost new.

No, it doesn't: flavorings, colorings and added sweeteners do.

What VG does do is makes it harder for the eliquid to get in when the wicking has become gunked up, because it has a much thicker consistency than PG. So people will notice their coils stop producing vapor sooner than with a higher PG mix, and attribute it to VG. If there's any effect by the VG itself breaking down, it's very minor.

Pinky swear.
