Isopropyl alcohol should be ok IF you let it dry completely, but to avoid any issues I use PGA (pure grain alcohol, i.e. "drinking" alcohol). This is classified in the states as a vodka beverage and is available in liquor stores (in most states). If that is not available then any strong vodka (100 proof or better) could be used. That wouldn't be quite as good as pure alcohol but it avoids any issues if it doesn't completely evaporate.
...I forgot to add...
I use the PGA mainly on gear that has been used in order to remove stains and residual flavors. For new gear what I do is disassemble it completely and wash it in hot tap water with a toothbrush and dish soap (very good for grease/oil removal). Then I spread it out on paper towels and leave it to dry completely before reassembly. If you're in a hurry, you can give the washed gear a quick bath in very hot tap water. The heated parts will dry more quickly.
