OK, so I'm still new to this. When I first started vaping last week, I had decided that for work and home, the USB pass through was probably a good idea, save the batteries for when I'm out and about... I noticed the other day that when I use the PT for more than just a few hits, it starts being harsh... Not sure how else to explain it. Of course, being only a few days in when this first happened, I was completely clueless. Yesterday I tried the PT again, with a brand new carto. Just a few hits in, it was really harsh again. I had tried the new carto on a battery and it was fine. I opened the carto and dropped 10 more drops of juice in and it wasn't over-filled. I had also refilled the other cartos that were harsh when I used them on the PT and they were fine after refilling. So, I'm not sure if the question is if my PT is burning up the cartos... Or if it's normal to have to refill so frequently when using a PT?

It would be nice to know what PT you have, and what cartos you are using.
The reason I say that is because if you are using a PT like the eGo PT that has a battery then a LR (2ohm) carto would be the one to use.
But, if your PT does not also have a battery, then I can well imagine that LR carto burning the hair out of your nose if you let it get the slightest bit dry.
A SR (3ohm) carto is 7th heaven in my book on a 5v pass through. However, that huge cloud of vapor does come at the price of using more juice.

    Mariposa, welcome.
Now that you have enough posts, come join us at the V4L subforum...

In the meantime to summarize: Yes, the pass thru is 5volts, while V4L batts are less than that (4.2ish?) and other batts are still lower. More voltage will burn ANY carto hotter than less voltage.

    What carto's do you have?
WOW = Low Resistance (fewer ohms) and therefore burn hotter.
CoolCarts have more ohms (a measure of resistance) so they burn cooler.
(on an equal power source voltage)

Think of lightbulbs.... higher wattage bulbs are hotter/brighter because their filaments have fewer ohms (less resistance).

    purists: yes, I'm oversimplifying.

If you use a cartomizer whose ohms are more than 2 less than the voltage of the passthrough, they are going to be too hot and singe. So a 5v passthrough should be using cartos that are at least 3 ohms. Your V4L WOW cartos are around 2.5 ohms

If you want a passthrough with the same heat as your V4L batteries (3.7v) then I recommend like an Ego variable aka 3-stage passthrough (Gotvapes and not sure who else has them) and put a 510 to 808 adapter on it (99 cents at Goodprophets). That will charge the battery and once it's charged a bit you can vape it while it charges.

Another great answer, dormouse. But I'm a bit puzzled by the USB charging/Passthrough bit. USB *should* be USB. (Standards are great because there are so many.) The current USB 3.0 standard provides for +5V and a maximum of 5 unit loads (Or 500mA without a driver). So how can a e-cig work at all off of a USB port? (+5V/3 Ohms = 1.67 Amps)

I appreciate the oversimplification. lol I need it! And thanks. I subscribed there yesterday. :) I have mostly CoolCarts, but I also have some WOW carts.
