the reason they say unprotected is the protected batteries can be a tad bit longer then unprotected. Also some mods will have issues because of their protection settings wont mesh with the batteries protection. I believe certain vamo's had that issue.

I would just invest in some good imr's like sony vtc3's or 4's, aw imr's, or even mnke's.

Protected Li-ion batteries are ICR chemistry batteries, and are not considered to be either "high drain" or "safe chemistry".

IMR (Li-mn) and most hybrid chemistry batteries are high drain, safe chemistry, and also called unprotected.

Regulated VV/VW mods like the VTR perform at their best when you use high drain batteries. Technical - why high drain batteries?
Regulated mods use pulse-current regulation (PWM - pulse width modulation) which require more amperage than a protected ICR can give.

thanks everyone....I have read that the vtr will work with either but I like to get what they suggest....however that will talk me out of getting it since I have a half dozen of the protected one's already....
Your only choices then will be a mechanical mod using factory-made juice attachments. All regulated VV/VW mods require high drain batteries.

Using a Kick in a mechanical mod will require high drain batteries (again IMR or hybrid batteries).

There really is no reason or application to use protected ICR batteries in this day of modern battery technology. Safe-chemistry high-drain batteries are far safer than ICR (Li-ion) protected batteries which use a flamable chemistry and therefore need protected circuits built into them just to be halfway safe to use. Should these batteries fail into thermal runaway, they can vent in flames and possibly explode. That risk may be small unless it happens to you. It happened to me (the last battery below was one of mine).

What exactly did you do to make that battery explode ?

The mechanical mod's fire switch unknowingly got stuck in the "on" position. This caused the battery to rapidly over-discharge and go into thermal runaway.

This mechanical didn't have the built-in protective safety circuitry features that a VV/VW regulated mod has. Safety features such as timed auto cutoff of the fire button, on/off mode, over-discharge protection, or thermal protection. The protected circuit in the battery itself failed. The collapsable hot spring in the mod failed to prevent the battery from overheating. Because protected Li-Ion batteries are a volatile chemistry, it vented flames and extremely hot gas.

The mod was too hot to touch when I found it. Upon later inspection both ends of the battery had blown out and the battery casing had melted. The mod's fire switch was ruined. The pants pocket where the mod was when this happened was badly scorched and burnt (I was not wearing the pants at the time). This could have caused major fire damage had I not found the mod when I did.
