Instead of powder coating, consider DuraCoat. It is intended to create a water-proof, hard durable coating on firearms.

It works on stainless steel. I have a VTR, and I am thinking on using it. It comes in many different colors. You mix it with a hardener and spray it on with an airbrush or paint sprayer. No heating is required, so there shouldn't be any issues with needing to remove the guts of the PV. It will be much more durable than powder coating and you can create your own colors and design, if you're interested.

DuraCoat Firearm Finishes

Cerakote is another one similar to DuraCoat except that it requires soaking in a degreasser and oven baking, so it gets ruled out for use on the VTR.

Just a suggestion.

Agree whit the answers you have. I thought I'd like the shiny stainless look of my VTR and I do when I clean off all the fingerprints I was thinking of coating mine as well But maybe with something like Dura coat for firearms. you can get plenty of good colors. I do my own Aluminum anodizing Type II. I know Stainless can be anodized but not sure the same stuff can be used for it as I use for aluminum. Maybe it merits looking into. I do have a friend who painted his with bed liner coating. doesn't look half bad and the rubber grip feel, feels good in your hand. He did not disassemble anything just masked off the screen, button and thumbwheel, led and screw heads and had at it. think he said he used tooth pick ends in the vent holes to keep the vents open. when I checked it out it was a very thin layer so my guess is he thinned it with something, when I had it applied to my truck bed it was thick and added a 1/4" thickness in my truck bed.

LOL javadan you posted about the dura coat as I was writing this

Powder would be very durable but yeah you're going to have to get anything that can't take ~400 degrees out of there. I've thought about it as well. The nickel is nice but so hard to keep clean. A matte black would be awesome. If it's the plated one, it would probably need some prep as well. The nickel doesnt have to come off all the way but for good adhesion at least a scuff or etch would be smart.

I haven't taken my VTR apart yet. If I do I think one primary task is going to be to carve out some metal to get the weight down. Seems like there's a lot of bulk that just doesn't need to be there. It also looks like it could be chopped. If I find a beater I'm going to try to shrink it to 18350 size.

Oh, surprised no one mentioned wraps. That might be the easier way to go. :)
