Does anyone know if its best to let a 510 battery run pretty much dead before recharging or can I switch them out when I anticipate its near the time?

A- No, it is better to recharge more often; avoid frequent full discharges.
Do and don't battery table
Do charge the battery often. The battery lasts longer with partial rather than full discharges.
If I'm around, I switch out as soon as I see the green light on the charger on the one charging.
Good info there Kent. I try not to let mine run down all the way. When I'm home I'll probably run them down to 50% or so and then recharge, hoping to get a little extra life out of them in the long run.
