Joye Ego - having problems

Hey all,

I recently bought a Joye Ego from Heavens Gift. I set one battery up with a Type A atty and cart and one with a type B atty and cart.

I am not getting much vapor out of it and I am finding I need to draw back pretty hard. This surprised me as I expected the opposite.

With one of the two batteries, the vapor production started to improve significantly when the cartridge was half empty but as soon as I filled it up again it was difficult to draw back and get much vapor. I have been filling he Ego atomizer up the same way I fill 510s - I wait until the liquid starts to pool at the top indicating it is full. I also drip a couple of drops directly on the atty coil.

I had no problem at all with vapor production when I attached my normal 510 atty and cart to the ego. The problem is when I use the type A and B Ego carts and atties.

Am I doing something wrong? Am I over filling? Is there an optimum way to fill Ego carts?

Can't imagine what the problem might be unless either the atties or the batteries are bad. But you have ruled out the batteries...

I was thinking that because the type A and B carts are so big and wide that filling them up until they pool will have a lot of liquid seeping directly onto the atty and flooding it. I've even tried blowing out the battery end of the atty to try and de-flood it but that isn't working either.

What sort of juice are you using? I noticed when I upped the VG ratio on one of my peppermint juices it caused a similar issue.

Another thing I noticed is that the ego with either of the larger cart systems (A or B) tends to prefer it when the carts aren't full. I use a toothpick to push the stock filler down a bit into the carts, fill them until the level rises to just below the top (1mm or so) and then use the toothpick to raise the filler to flush and then insert the cart. This keeps air bubbles from getting trapped at the bottom and insures an even distribution of liquid throughout the cart. I also stopped dripping the primer drops onto the mesh before setting the cart. I think that before doing this, the coil gets a bit too much juice which keeps the coil from reaching its optimal temperature for vapor production. Once the fluid level steadies (about 3/4 full or so on the cart) the filler wicks just fast enough to keep the level perfect. Once the fluid in the cart is nearly expended (just enough to keep the filler wet) it doesn't wick enough and you get the funky taste.

I use generic dekang fluids with a 80/20 PG/VG mix ratio and it seems to be a perfect balance for me. Less VG tends to leak a little on occasion and more seems to wick to slowly for me.

Hi Tinstar, thank you for this very helpful post. I suspect the problem is that there is too much fluid and the air is not pushing through the cartridge because it is, well essentially flooded and condensed in there. I have been filling my carts the way I fill my normal 510s which is right to the brim until a pool develops.

I like your method of pushing the filler down, filling it to just below the top and then pulling it up into position. That should allow the air to push through. I haven't tried it yet but I think it might do the trick.

I used liquids that worked fantastic in my regular Joye 510. I used Freedom Smokes USA Wyatt Earp Signature 70/30 Pg/VG 12 mg and FreedomSmokes Ry4 with the same Pg/Vg and strength. (I love their Ry4. It leaves Heavens Gifts Ry4 for dust. I did not like the latter but loved the former).

Thanks, I hope it works out for you. Just be careful not to crush the filler when pushing it in, makes it harder to un-crush after filling. It only has to move down a few millimeters.

Could you clarify what you mean by 'filling the mesh when the cart is in position'. Do you mean, adding extra drops to the top of the filler?

Sure, step by step I:

1) Pull cart off atty. Using a paper towel or similar item, clean off liquid on outside of cart and vents.
2) Examine filler to see if it's showing any signs of excess wear, burnt, or dirty. If OK, skip to 4.
3) If dirty or burnt I remove filler, wash it in hot water, dry it, and carefully trim burnt portions with scissors
4) Use toothpick or paperclip or similar item to push filler a tad away from the edge of cart and then push down into the cart approximately 3mm. Set toothpick aside. Use a light touch when pushing down on the filler. It doesn't need to go far and it's tricky to "re-fluff" or uncompress the filler. The way the factory seems to have sized the filler in all of my carts is that there is about 3mm of space from the bottom of the filler to the bottom of the cart.
5) Refill cart until liquid is roughly 1mm from top edge of cart.
6) Use toothpick to "hook" the filler and raise it back to top of cart. As you do this, it will appear that the mesh is drying out as it comes flush with the top. If I intend to begin vaping right away, I add a tiny drop to the filler. If done correctly, it looks slightly moistened but not saturated.
7) Use pick to reset filler as it was so that there are no voids between the filler and cart edges.
8) Re-insert cart onto atty and enjoy.

I don't drain, dry, or empty my attys as some do. I only disconnect them from the battery when not in use. I don't add priming drops to the mesh as this has tended to decrease performance briefly for me. When not in use I leave them set cart end down in a double shot glass or inverted in my lanyard. At night, I disconnect the atty from the battery and set them on their sides. No horrific issues with leaking aside from the occasional bit of liquid at the cart/atty mating surfaces edge.

One additional point. And I learned this from personal experience. Make absolutely certain, that you do in fact pull the filler back out, so that the edge of it matches the edge of the cartridge. I inadvertently left the filler pushed down into the cartridge housing at one point, failing to pull it back out so the edges match up. Doing so, caused the eGo to produce barely a smidgeon of vapor. Until I actually pulled the cartridge back out, and compared it with a brand new blank cartridge to see how they compared, I didn't realize that the filler remaining pushed in would affect the performance so adversely. After pulling it back out as described, the eGo worked perfectly and has so ever since.

AnthonyB: do your type A atty/cart combo make a gurgling sound no matter how full or empty they are? Just got these, & can't understand why mine are doing this.

Did you blow out the priming fluid? All five of my type B's were loaded w/ the stuff, and would not vape untill it was blown out.

i find if i fill the cart and then drip on the atty - it clogs it up...try this - 3 drops on the atty and then 1 or 2 on the cart to keep it moist...

too much liquid can choke out anything no matter the power...

Making noise? Have you tried blowing the mouth piece out? I find that any time I blow out the mouth piece I get a lot of mosture out. Wipe the sides of the cart down, blow out the mouth piece, rewipe cart...repeat untill I get tired, 3 to 5 times and I'm still getting some mosture out.

i just bought a brand new ego and Im having a similar problem. It is extremely hard to pull even when dripping with no filler.

Its like there is no way for air to pass through the atomizer/cone
