I jumped straight from a kr808d to a Reo Grand and then got a "reomizer" and started doing my own wire/wick builds in the span of a few weeks so if I can do it anyone can. You may still prefer the "convenience" of a standard atty/carto here and there but I've never had one on my Reo Grand since I learned how to do my own re-builds (I have 2 "reomizers" and one is always ready to go if I need to rebuild the one on the unit or even just slip in a new wick.)

Got the Reomizer up and running. I don't think it's quite fully broken in yet, but I love it so far. It's exactly what I needed: flavor's good and getting better, adjustable airflow (via a method I saw someone here mention with a snipped-off piece of carto-condom), and I can see what's going on, don't have to just wonder like with an atty.

The Vapage Hybrids work well too (though the draw is a little tight, might have to try opening up those air holes), they'll be my backup backups though, for I see myself doing like Norman said above: getting another Reomizer . . .

I had to slap myself on the wrist last night: I started browsing the available REO's contemplating whether a mini or another VV Grand would be better as a backup . . .

Thanks for all the insight everyone, it's priceless.

Congratulations and welcome aboard no need to slap yourself Reos are probably the most dependable devices known to man and Rob has got the best turnaround time for repairs in the ENTIRE industry but if you ever have to send it off you'll be madder than hell that you don't have a backup :D

A big yes to this. My Grand went down, after a year and a half so I sent it to Rob for a little tune-up. In meantime I went back to old Ego-T and it was brutal, so I bought a new Grand and now have old Grand as backup. The way to fly.
