Unsuccessful vegan is nothing to be ashamed of, that food is just kinda blah. That being said, your palette will change the less you smoke, you're no longer killing taste buds every time you light up, so you might find you like it better later on.
Just be careful when trying to change too many facets of your life at the same time, slow and steady wins the race.
Oh and whole-wheat pasta likes to mingle with other flavors, its rather lack luster on its own. Go with a ziti/penne/rigatoni shape, cook according to package directions for al dente. Pair it with a lower sodium marinara (read the label) and good lowfat (2% or skim) cheese blend (iirc Sargento makes an "Italian" blend in 2%.) Mix cooked pasta, sauce and cheese in a deep casserole, pop in the over at 350 for 25 min (uncovered) and yummy snacks await. Just don't eat it all at once, kinda defeats the purpose, but makes great leftovers, even cold.
If you're looking to avoid the dairy, you can also heat some good quality olive oil with a bit of minced onion, garlic and basil (I like it fresh from the garden) and toss your pasta in it after its done cooking.
