Looking at recipes I have found some that list flavors that add up to over 40% and I have made some assumptions based on my reading that I want to verify.

Most flavors contain PG and they add to the percentage of PG in the final mix?

Do I really use 4 ml of flavors and 6 ml of PG/VG to make 10 ml of juice?

I am still waiting for my flavor delivery (damn the holiday) how do I tell how much PG is in the flavor? Is it on the flavor bottle?

I have seen sites that say they have some flavors with VG. This is for those who have problems with PG?

You are correct that most flavorings use PG and it does count towards the total PG content. 40% flavor seems excessive but you need to remember that not all flavors are created equal. For instance loranne flavors are very weak and average usage is 15 - 25%. While hangsen flavors on average use 5 - 7% and inawera flavorings, most measure by drops like 4 - 6 drops per 10ml base. SO you really need to experiment. Start at the lowest manufacturer recommended amount and work your way up. recipes by others are very deceving as they may like a very strong mix while for you it may be to strong. So common sense rules when it comes to mixing.

Let me recommend some additional reading while you wait for your supplies

Read my blogs before getting started

then read hoosier's blogs.

then read the stickies at the top of the page.

this will explain a lot of the how's and why's.

If my flavors aren't bought in VG (None are) I count the total amount added towards my PG. As for total amount of flavoring, 40% sounds way to much to me. The most I've ever added was 21-22% (in a 6 flavor mix). I'm normally between 5-15%. What company is making the flavoring you purchased? Good luck!

Cheers,
Steve

40% is pretty high for flavoring (as high as I've ever heard). But you are correct in that most flavors are PG based so even if you used VG NIC and VG to make up the difference you still would only end up with a 40/60 (pg/vg) mix.

I have a problem with PG so I mix as close to 100% VG as I can. So I start with 100% VG NIC then the only PG I have in a mix is flavor. I like to try to find flavoring that is good at tiny percentages. They are out there. I just tried the Inawera Sex on the Beach at 2% (about two drops in 5ml) and it is great! Many of the Flavour Art flavors are great at 2-3%. I hardly ever go over 5% on FA flavors so my mixes end up 5/95 or less most of the time. I've found that I can go up to 20% PG without problems but start to notice at percentages above that.

I do have a couple that I mix at 18% flavor but right now I think that's about the most I use. Since flavor is the biggest unknown as far as vaping safety goes, I prefer to keep it as low as possible.

And yes, VG flavors can be for people with problems with PG but I don't know if that's why they exist. I have not tried any myself since I don't seem to have a problem until the PG level goes over 20% as I said. If you have a real problem with PG I'd for sure look into the VG based flavors. There have been quite a few threads covering PG sensitivity. I google search should help with that.

Have a great Memorial Day and keep mixing!

I am just starting so I ordered several different manufacturers in the hope that I could pick one I liked. I looked on E-Liquid Recipes at one for tropical fruit salad and it has over 40% flavor. It seemed a bit excessive so I decided to check.

IMO, 40% flavoring is past the point of excessive over-flavoring. LorAnn flavors, like Danny said, do come off as weaker, thus requiring more, though not to the point of 40%. Some FlavorWest flavors are weaker and do require 15-25% according to some, though I've never used them past 15% total. That said, you won't find recipes using FlavourArt or Inawera using 40% flavoring because they would overload your taste buds to the point of coming off overpowering, perfumey and chemical-like due to their potency. It'd be a true waste of flavoring to mix that high with those two brands.

FlavourArt, for me, never exceeds 5-10% and Inawera, well...they are a bit unique. The majority of the flavors I've tried from them never exceed 1-2% max; most use 6-10 drops per 10-15ml. To me, 40% seems like someone tossed a bunch of flavors in a mix and found that one was overpowering the other so they kept trying to balance it out and ended up with a super-high percentage which would be reduced by half if not more.
