With a Subtank Mini it cones with an RBA deck if you want to get into building. When u used a Subtank Nano I rebuilt the OCC heads. Rip Trippers on You Tube shows a stupid simple build for those.
About mods I can recommend three for you
Coolfire 4, istick40tc, and Wismecc Presa. This one has Temperature control now. The Istick 40 has Temperature control but according to the msnuslbonly does TC with Nickel. I don't do Nickel because of an allergy.
All of those are 40 watt devices
Awesome. Thanks for the response. I've never heard of the Wismecc and I did consider the iStick 40TC. I was looking at the Cloupor Mini Plus and the IPV D2. Any thoughts on those? I figure I'd get something with a little more power and TC so that I can toy with it in the future without having to purchase a new mod.
I supposedly won a Cloupor Mini but have not received it yet.

Here is another mod to consider. The Evic Mini. Would recommend that over the cloupor. The Cloupor only goes to 30 watts. That's OK for me because I rock acGiblin Mini and a Kayfun Nano.
I recommend the Evic mini because it has temp control and will go up to 60 watts if memory serves
I have a Subtank mini on a iStick 40w TC and I'd have to say its a perfect pair, 2600mah battery lasts quite a while, dirt cheap too have seen them as low as 25$ online..
I would have saved a lot of money if I just went out and bought a higher powered mod instead of gradually upgrading over time, so if you have the cash get a higher powered mod like the ipv4s or something in that range.. With dual 18650s at lower wattages like the subtank mini the batteries would last a very long time...

The only word of caution I would add is keep an eye on the wattage. Don't try vaping a Subtank Mini on 60 watts because those OCC heads are only rated for 30-35 watts. Vaping burned cotton tastes nasty.
It all depends on budget really. I mean if you want to go for high power boxes its gonna cost a lot more but if you just want to get tinkering with things a 75watt mod and a decent dripper will set you off to a start.
My drippers I'm always tinkering with adjusting my coils, re-wicking, sloping my coils a little, moving them outwards but I find I just carnt do that with tanks as easely.
Tanks are still good for on the go though.

Yeah, my budget is $50 or less if that's possible. Any pros and cons of built-in batteries vs the replaceable ones?
All depends on how tightly you pack the coil.
I have had my Goblin Mini with cotton wick up to 32 watts without a burned hit. One reviewer rocked the Goblin Mini at 70 watts without a dry hit.
If you cram the coil so the cotton can't wick properly you can get a dry hit at 15 watts.
batteries cost money and you'll need a charger with it too. after getting a battery and a charger you wont have much for a mod with shipping..
Edit** the good thing about batteries is you can get several of them and always have one or two charged up and ready to go.
I'd go for the iStick 40w TC then as it works perfect for me and is a great match for the subtank mini.
I use an Istick 40TC too. Good little mod.
It has only two problems.
1. According to the manual the only Temperature control wire it works with is Nickel. And I'm allergic to Nickel. Another ECF member said he used Titanium but he had to turn the Temp down 100-130 degrees.
2. The Istick 40 TC does Temperature control only at the full 40 watts meaning battery us drained quickly
In regular (power) mode the mod is awesome!
I carry s SMPL mech mod just in case the Istick runs down or dies. I have been very pleased with my little Istick.
In the beginning I thought I had a problem but the problem was that a screw on the atty I was using kept backing out. Got rid of the defective screw and she has been smooooooth sailing ever since.
I like the Istick even more than the Coolfire4.
Same maximum wattage. More mah than the Coolfire4 and weighs 1 1/3 oz less!

I personally prefer a replaceable battery over a built in one. The ability to have a charged battery at hand when the mod battery has died has been a blessing. Because of my good experiences with Cloupor, the Mini plus would be my #1 pick for a single battery "to go" mod. They happen to be running an event where you have a chance to win one. Look at the Cloupor giveaway tab at the top in the New Users area.... it wouldn't hurt to try to win one.

I know about the give away of the Cloupor Mini. I supposedly won one of them about earlier this week.
I was not sure about the model given out on ECF i did my Google fu as Grimmgreen calls it and the info about the Cloupor mini only goes to 30 watts so I recommended the Evic Mini because that will go to 60 watts.
Well, it will be a while before you will get it. The model you won is called the "Cloupor Mini Plus". The version Grim Green was talking about was the "Cloupor Mini"
The "Cloupor Mini" is their 30w mod. It is incredibly small, and a nice mod. It's gotten a bad rap, but I own one, and I like it.
The "Cloupor Mini Plus" is their newer version that is 50w and offers temperature control for both NI-200 and Titanium. They just released this version.
The thing that confuses me, is why would they call it the same as the Cloupor Mini.. no number to distinguish between the two. The old version had a few of their mainboards overheat, and it has given them a bad rap. Their new version is a totally different mod. The box is 1mm taller and wider, different PCB, Different 510 connector... so any reviews on the Mini do not really apply to this mod. It will have a superficial resemblance to the Mini as far as looks. It will cause a lot of confusion between the two.

But I was OK with a 30 watt mod because I use a Kayfun Nano and a Goblin Mini at 17.5-20 watts.
