Just got my reo grand today but questioning the battery that I ordered

After reading a bit more about the reo grand I see most people are recommending and IMR 18650. I purchased 2 of

AW 18650 Protected 2600 mAh Rechargeable Lithium Battery

I'm not quite sure what the difference is or if one would perform better than the other. Anyone know?

Well...I'm no expert, but the first major difference is the size. The IMR is a shorter battery....giving maximum drop if a short occurs and the spring collapses...ensuring the current is stopped so damage to the battery and the mod is averted.
The IMRs have a safer chemistry so that if something goes sideways, they are less apt to catch on fire.

Please keep in mind that in everything, failure happens....IMRs can vent as well as protected batteries whose protection circuits fail. Just use common sense, keep your batteries in good condition and if you notice any thing weird developing in their shape or performance, its better to be safe than sorry...so just toss them.

And they're flat top....this doesn't make them impossible to use, but you will need to push the button down farther. It can also make charging difficult as the positive contacts on some chargers are slightly recessed.

I have used both batteries in my Reo Grand, both perform well. I like the IMRs but the others work very well, I dont notice much difference in how the Reo works either way.

Okay, good info Rhapsodies and Studio, those pictures are helpful thanks! I should have done more research before getting overly excited and clicking order. Hopefully the batteries and charger will be in tomorrow. My Reo is sadly sitting naked waiting...

and don't forget to use a loop or long piece of tape to wrap around the battery leaving a tab to pull on. I'm having a hell of a time getting this black battery out of the grand!


No problem I knew they could be used, but wanted to make sure they fit. And they do...but way too tightly for my tastes. I would not be able to get the battery out fast enough in the event of a short.


Sidenote...To be fair...I just realized I had a 2900mah in there, not a 2600mah. But the same principal applies. The 2600mah is just a tad shorter than the 2900s

So I got my batteries and charger in the mail to find out the batteries won't charge I'm assuming because they are flat top and the + end isn't making contact with the charger. The charger light is red for about 30 seconds then it goes green until I take the battery out and put it back in. Is there a fast fix for this or am I going to have to buy spacers or new batteries? =/

You need to user a spacer on the positive end of the battery in order to make a connection with the charger.

You can try Hobby Lobby as well. Just take extra caution with the spacers. Clean the contact points often and check your voltages before and after you charge the batteries.

Radio Shack sells little rare earth magnets that can work as spacers, but they're a little smaller than I'd like.

Just curious but are you trying to charge them before or after you used them for the first time because they normally come precharged and it sounds like the charger is telling you they're full

when go out to get spacers, buy yourself a multimeter so you can see what your batteries are reading. Charge them around 3.6. Fully charged is 4.2. pmoraldo may be right, your batteries might just be fully charged to begin with. all of mine that I have bought have come fully charged.

I was reading they come partially charged so I assumed they weren't fully charged. I will continue to use one and stick it in the charger in a few hours. The charger I have is Ultrafire WF-139 Charger for 14500 / 17500 / 18500 / 18650 / RCR123 3.7 volt Lithium Battery Charger

It seems like the positive contact points are almost flush with the charger, I suppose I'll find out in a few hours if its making enough contact or not. It sounds like a good idea to pick up a multimeter too.

I use magnets....not disc magnets, but more cylinder shaped magnets. Not sure if that will work with 18650s or not. Wayne also said you might try to bend the positive contact on the charger out a little. That is what he did with his and he charges his flat tops just fine now.

So after giving myself a nicotine overdose testing out the reo and trying to drain the battery I threw it on the charger and it stayed red.. Feels stupid.

I'm enjoying it so far but I'm waiting on some LR306 2ohm attys to come in the mail. I'm stuck using standard resistance 510 attys that seems to produce much more vapor on my eGo for some reason. Hopefully the 306's will be a different story.

So..the standard 510s really work better at the higher voltage, so I'm not surprised. Also, it is possible that your atty may be flooded a little...and that will kill off the vapor production too. The 306s are wicked on these mods. I hope you like them too

Yeah, I found the SR 510s to be disappointing.

My SR 510's are stashed away until I get me a VV Grand next year. Then they'll be useful again.
