Ok so I've been really interested in rba's and all that stuff, but I got kind of bogged down by all the options as far as wicking material and wire types and all that. Today i decided to try some stuff out before I actually bought any of that stuff. I already own a splitfire and I had seen pbusardo do a video of a coil rebuild for his splitfire, so I thought what heck. Bought some organic 100% cotton wipes (for nail polish removal) from cvs for $1. Boiled them up for a few minutes just to be safe. They actually roll up into wicks really well. Now I needed some wire! I'm not sure if this was wise but I decided to take apart an older coil head and use that wire, discarding the silica wick it came with. I wrapped the coil around the wicks, sort of. I did a terrible job and it was by far, the most infuriating thing I've had to do in as long as I can remember. My question now is, what's the worst that can happen if there's a short and I try it out on my lavatube version 2? I can check the ohm's on it first, which I suppose would be the smart thing to do, but I don't think that will tell me if there's a short in there. Guess I'm looking for some reassurance. Any help?

Welcome to ECF jaybles!

Yes, do the ohms check before you power the coil the first time. As Twitteliedoe said, if you have a complete short your resistance will be close to zero. Using cotton wick you will not have issues with the coil to a stainless steel wick causing 'minor' shorts (like the genny rba's can do). So if your coil is reading good it should be stable as you use it and you are good to go. The LT also has short protection built in that will shut itself down if a short develops and you power up in that scenario.

I have a LT ver 1.5 witch has resistance checking and I've been using an AGA T with SS wick on it for the last few weeks now. The LT will not put out more than its amp limit no matter what. On the subject of worst case scenarios, FYI I did manage to physically short out my LT once, which was completely my fault not the LT's, and it got quite hot at the 510 connector end. Have fun and hope it works well for you!

Hey, I'm a newbie too. My best shot so far is a ViVi Nova: unbraided #1 candle wick with a 2.4ish ohm looseish 32AWG 4 to 5 wrap coil. Cut small V's in the silicone cap, the cotton swells when well soaked in juice. Set around 4 to 4.2v. Sucking up a 40/60 PG/VG tobacco flavor mix at 10mg/ml works for me. I boiled the candle wick 20 mins, dried then unpicked it with a pin. I tried leaving it braided as it comes but it doesnt wick so good that way. Gives pretty good vapor, flavor, throat hit. Remember to presoak the wick with juice before firing up! (dry cotton burns!) and also to fill the tank then let it soak for 20 minutes to swell and wick up.
