More trivia...
Many communities have boasted and claimed the creation of the holiday. Even the southern states have evidence that it began there. However, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a proclamation on May 26, 1966 that Waterloo, New York was the official birthplace. It was the first village to observe the sacred day on May 5, 1866 publicly and each year thereafter. There is no way to prove the origin of the holiday, but the whole human race in general contributed to the honor of our dead and that is what is important about Memorial Day.

5/30 #1 I know this was mentioned somewhere, but I just ran across this fact and wanted to post it again because I think it's important to know the difference

Fact: Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans

5/30/14 #1 - Guess I will get on to the trivia train today.

It wasn’t always celebrated the last Monday of May

After the Civil War, General John A. Logan, commander in chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, called for a holiday commemorating fallen soldiers to be observed every May 30. But due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which took effect in 1971, Memorial Day was moved to the last Monday of May to ensure long weekends. Some groups, like the veterans’ organization American Legion, have been working to restore the original date to set the day apart and pay proper tribute to the servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives defending the nation.

5/30/14 #2 - It’s legally required to observe a National Moment of Remembrance

In December 2000, Congress passed a law requiring Americans to pause at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day to remember and honor the fallen. But this doesn’t appear to be common knowledge, or if it is, by 3 p.m. most people seem to be too deep into a hot dog-induced food coma to officially observe the moment.

I had no idea this was a law. I wonder what the penalty is for breaking it, not that I am guilty of this but way too many are.
