Kanger evod - like harsh krispies

Good morning folks.. I'm having an issue with my evod that started yesterday. I'm still pretty new to this game and couldn't find a definitive answer to my problem with a simple search.
I've got two Evods that I regularly switch between, depending on flavor. I've been using my ego-c VV. 650mAH. Well, the setup seems to have been giving me awfully harsh hits the last few days. Its fine if I'm careful on the draw, but I like full, satisfying hits that don't feel like acid on the throat!
Then yesterday, I started getting a lot of feedback - hissing, popping, and crackling. I'm thinking its an atomizer issue, as Ive been switching the same Atty between two Evods (lost one of the bases).
So this morning I took the evod apart and rinsed it out good, let it dry, then loaded it back up. The crackling persisted for a little bit, but has since quieted down. The harshness remains. I suppose this is what's called a dry hit?
How do I remedy this? Do I just need to be more vigilant on maintenance? What causes the snap, crackle and pop? Is the harshness a consequence of certain flavor? (The PG/VG is 50/50).
Thanks very much for the help!

Thanks for the suggestion.
I was hesitant to change the atomizer as I had put this one in about a week before and did not notice any issues; however, I did end up breaking it down to look for any bits that seemed out of place (I suppose my next self-imposed research project will be learning all about the mechanism that makes my new toy work!). I noticed that the bottom post that touches the battery was spinning freely in its seat, and my other atomizer didn't seem to do that. Not knowing how to correct this, o junked it and popped in a new atomizer.
The problem persists. Now I'm thinking that it could be an issue with the juice - I've heard mention thyroid thin juices tend to leak out of Evods. Or that I've screwed the evod too tightly on the battery and caused pressure on the system.
Honestly I'm frustrated and lost. I loved my Evods for a couple weeks, but frankly I'm not knowledgeable enough yet to deal with these functionality issues. I can't sit at my desk and mop up juice from ecig all day without getting some feedback, either. I need to sit down and learn more about the system, I just don't have the time right now. Highly considering trying out vivi novas..

"Highly considering trying out vivi novas.."

I have had a great deal of luck with Vivi Nova Mini's. They vape well and don't leak. I am hoping Kanger fixes these Here's a link to modding one and building a new coil. I added more wick to the unit and over the top of the coil and it stopped 99% of the leaks (making it "usable") but it still does. Hope this helps: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/tanks/404174-evod-protank-head-rebuild.html

Your liquid is to viscous IMO. Switch to a more fluid liquid for using in tanks and cartos 70/30.

Some folks have had success with removing a couple of strands of wicks that simply sit on the coil. Start with removing one, if that doesn't do it, remove the 2nd one. I have had no problems using my liquids at 30/70, mind you I DIY and all my VG is cut 20% with distilled water.

I've been using the evod for a few weeks with (almost) no issues, I love them, everyone has their preferances, it's all about finding what works for you. I have just started building my own coils and using cotton wicks(thanks to you tube) with even better results, try that, btter vapour and flavour(altho i thought it was good in the first place!)

i too use 70/30 mix, that could be where the issue lies??

That is where the issue lies--the EVOD rocks on e-juices as long as they are NOT 100% PG or 100% VG fluids.
I tried my first EVOD with 100% PG juice and it leaked--tried it with 100% VG juice and got dry hits. Then switched
to 50/50 PG/VG and it worked perfectly.

All comes down to wicking, the very thing PG flows too much and leaks, the VG is very thick and can't wick fast enough to
prevent dry hits--generally because you take a hit for too long of a time. Now mix the two 50/50 and it's thick enough not
to leak but thing enough to flow quickly and not get dry hits.

If you DIY like I do, you'll notice that PG is very thin and VG is like gravy--very thick. One wick design can't handle very thin to crazy thick with a single wick (or multiple wicks) I cut my liquid 50/50 and that works perfectly until it gets down to around 25% full, then weird things happen. I just refill the EVOD when it gets weird--such is life I guess.

Also, make sure that your replacement wick/coil heads are genuine Kanger--the knock offs don't work as well (don't ask) I own a Vivi Nova Mini--has a very tight draw and don't forget the tilt and twirl to keep the wicks wet. Since I'm the "expert" vaper in these parts, I always recommend EVODs with 50/50 PG/VG juices...always!

I am building up a pile of old EVOD heads---going to try Kanthal flat wire and a single 3mm wick to create heaven on earth. Love the EVODs and am upgrading to the ultimate EVOD... the Mini Pro Tank. Basically and EVOD with a pyrex tank and it is open to easily see the liquid levels. It uses the Pro Tank heads so the solution is out there.

My Vivi Nova sits on a shelf, my Pro Tank sees little use but the EVODs are the go to clearos... until the Mini Pro Tank rolls out that is.

To further improve the Mini Pro Tank (or pyrex EVOD by design) I'll be making my own heads--luckily the EVOD allows that so a great clearo for every occasion. Enjoy!

I use evods religiously I love them. I think your problem could be as simple as a dirty wick happens to me all the time. I do recommend getting new heads at some point but it's a simple fix. Just take the bottom off and run it through hot water but take the rubber skirt off first. Then take the post the covers the wick off you just gotaa wiggle it. After that just pulse it on your battery to dry it out. when all the coils glow take a tooth pick and gently press the flavor wicks to the hot coils to dry them. Once the wicks are white again put it all back together and bam pow good as new. Hope this is helpful.

Thanks, Dbrent. I've tried taking the top part of the coil housing off and rinsing the 'flavor wick' but it never gets the lower one clean. I'll try this.

In regards to trying kanthal, I think I'll skip that and go straight for the safer (yet more expensive) option - silver wire.

What gauge do you surmise would work? I know it's not going to be cheap, but I'm still going to try it.

Also, if there's a more efficient wicking material for 50/50 juices in the EVOD, I'm all game. I've seen hemp suggested as a wicking material, previously. I know that silica wicks don't soak up juice as quickly as cotton, but then there's the issue of burning the wick and actually locating genuine cotton-rather than rayon or another pseudo-cotton substitute.

Even if all that cannot be done, I will say that the 50/50 blend I received from MVS did well in the EVOD at 2.5. I'm just hoping that the GeJ (NET) 50/50's agree similarly.

i just got into recoiling by hand on my protank, and it has gotten rid of all problems i.e gurgling dry hits.

i use a 3mm wick with 6 wraps of .32 gauge, get between 2.2 - 2.6 ohms. i also use 2 1mm wicks on top and let me tell you these things hit like a champ, best vapes i have gotten out of these yet. nice lung pulls, and no gurgling what so ever.

the evod coils are pretty much the same, so get some wick and wire on ebay and watch a couple vids on the tube, it's really easy.
